The 2006 California State Treasurer election occurred on November 7, 2006. The primary elections took place on June 6, 2006. Attorney General Bill Lockyer, the Democratic nominee, easily defeated the Republican nominee, Board of Equalization member Claude Parrish, for the office previously held by Democrat Phil Angelides, who was term-limited and ran for governor.

California State Treasurer position in state government

The California State Treasurer is responsible for the state's investment and finance. The post has narrower responsibilities and authority than the California State Controller. Some of the responsibilities include issuing bonds and notes for the state, and trustee, as well as registrar and paying agent for all general obligation bonds and certain revenue bonds investment of temporarily idle state money. The administration of the state's budgets, financial analyses and planning, money allocation, and economic research is under the California Department of Finance.

Bill Lockyer American politician

William Westwood Lockyer is a veteran California politician, who held elective office from 1973 to 2015, as State Treasurer of California, California Attorney General, and President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate. Described by journalistic observers as one of the state's most "colorful" and "shrewdest" public officials, he has long been known to speak his mind with an uncommon frankness that occasionally caused him political embarrassment.

The California Democratic Party is the state branch of the United States Democratic Party in the state of California. The party is headquartered in Sacramento, and is led by acting-Chair Alex Gallardo-Rooker.

The Secretary of State of California is the chief clerk of the U.S. State of California, overseeing a department of 500 people. The Secretary of State is elected for four year terms, like the state's other constitutional officers, and is restricted by term limits to only two terms. The current Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, took office on January 5, 2015.
