The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (formerly the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services and the Department of Communications) is one of the departments of the South African government. It is responsible for overseeing the South African communications, telecommunications and broadcasting industries. The political head of the department is the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, who is assisted by a deputy minister. As of August 2021 the minister is Khumbudzo Ntshavheni and her deputy is Philly Mapulane. [1]

In 2014 President Jacob Zuma renamed the original Department of Communications to the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, at the same time creating a new Department of Communications with different responsibilities, including propaganda. [2] [3] In June 2019 President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the two departments would be merged to create the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. [4]

Cyril Ramaphosa Current president of South Africa

Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is a South African businessman and politician who, since 2018, has served as the fifth democratically elected president of South Africa, as well as president of the African National Congress (ANC) since 2017. Previously an anti-apartheid activist, trade union leader and businessman, Ramaphosa served as secretary general to ANC President Nelson Mandela, deputy president to President Jacob Zuma, and chairman of the National Planning Commission from 2014 to 2018.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma South African politician

Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma, sometimes referred to by her initials NDZ, is a South African politician, doctor and anti-apartheid activist, currently serving as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. She was South Africa's Minister of Health from 1994 to 1999, under President Nelson Mandela, Minister of Foreign Affairs, under both President Thabo Mbeki and President Kgalema Motlanthe, Minister of Home Affairs in the first term of former President Jacob Zuma and Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission for Policy and Evaluation under President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Minister of State Security was a Minister of the South African government, who oversaw South Africa's civilian intelligence agencies and national security matters. In 2021 the ministry was abolished and the function of the minister was taken over by the Presidency.

The National Treasury is one of the departments of the South African government. The Treasury manages national economic policy, prepares the South African government's annual budget and manages the government's finances. Along with the South African Revenue Service and Statistics South Africa, the Treasury falls within the portfolio of the Minister of Finance. Throughout the course of President Jacob Zuma's second administration, the ministry has undergone several changes. Most notably, Nhlanhla Nene was suddenly dismissed on 9 December 2015, without explanation, and replaced with a relatively unknown parliamentary back-bencher from the ruling ANC's caucus, David 'Des' van Rooyen for a record-total of 3 days. He was, in turn, replaced by Pravin Gordhan after the President faced significant pressure from political and business groups over the move. On 30 March 2017 Jacob Zuma axed Pravin Gordhan and appointed Malusi Gigaba as a Finance Minister. Following Zuma's resignation, President Cyril Ramaphosa returned Nhlanhla Nene as Minister in his cabinet reshuffle on 26 February 2018.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services is the justice minister in the government of South Africa. He is the political head of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJCD), the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), and the Office of the Chief Justice. DoJCD is responsible for administrative support to the courts, oversight of the National Prosecuting Authority, the provision of legal services to departments of state, and law reform; and DSC is responsible for prisons and community corrections programmes.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies is a Minister in the Government of South Africa, responsible for overseeing the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. In 2014 President Jacob Zuma split the ministry by establishing the position of Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, but the ministries were combined again in 2018 under President Cyril Ramaphosa. President Ramaphosa changed the name to Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services. He later changed to the name to Communications and Digital Technologies.

Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy is a minister in the cabinet of the South African national government. The portfolio was called the Ministry of Minerals and Energy until May 2009, when President Jacob Zuma split it into two separate portfolios under the Ministry of Mining and the Ministry of Energy. Ten years later, in May 2019, his successor President Cyril Ramaphosa reunited the portfolios as the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy.

David Mahlobo is a South African politician and Deputy Ministry of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation. He is a former Minister of Energy and former Minister of State Security.

The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services was a Minister in the Cabinet of South Africa, established in 2014 by President Jacob Zuma, and combined into the Minister of Communications and Telecommunications in 2018 under President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams South African politician

Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams is a South African politician and the Minister of Small Business Development in the cabinet of Cyril Ramaphosa. She previously served as Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies and Deputy Minister of Communication. Ndabeni-Abrahams is a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), and a member of the Eastern Cape African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Working Committee (PWC)


Ayanda Dlodlo is a South African politician, cabinet minister and member of the African National Congress (ANC). Her current ministerial portfolio in Cyril Ramaphosa's cabinet is Minister of Public Service and Administration since 5 August 2021. Before, she was the Minister of State Security from 30 May 2019 until 5 August 2021.

Hlengiwe Mkhize South African politician

Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize was a South African politician, who served as Minister of Higher Education and Training under President Jacob Zuma.

Khumbudzo Phophi Silence Ntshavheni is a South African politician who is the current Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies and a member of the National Assembly of South Africa. She served as Minister of Small Business Development from 2019 to 2021. She is a party member of the African National Congress.

Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane South African Minister of Tourism

Mmamoloko Tryphosa Kubayi is a South African politician who is the Minister of Human Settlements and a Member of the National Assembly for the African National Congress (ANC). She was the Minister of Energy in 2017, the Minister of Communications from 2017 to 2018, the Minister of Science and Technology from 2018 to 2019, and the Minister of Tourism from 2019 to 2021.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is a department of the South African government which is responsible for the mining industry of South Africa, exploitation of the country's mineral resources, and the energy industry. It was known as the Department of Minerals and Energy until July 2009 when it was divided by President Jacob Zuma into the Department of Mineral Resources and the Department of Energy. In June 2019 President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the two departments were to be reunited under the current name. The political head of the department is the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, who is assisted by a deputy minister. As of August 2020 the minister is Gwede Mantashe while the position of deputy minister is vacant.

The executive branch of the national government of South Africa is divided into the cabinet and the civil service, as in the Westminister system. Public administration, the day-to-day implementation of legislation and policy, is managed by government departments, which are usually headed by permanent civil servants with the title of director-general.

Tandi Mahambehlala is a South African politician who has served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism since 2021. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), she served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation from 2019 to 2021. Mahambehlala was Deputy Minister of Communications between 2017 and 2018. She has been a Member of Parliament since 2014.
