The community most likely was named after the local Dimmock family. [2]
The Battle of Petersburg was an unsuccessful Union assault against the earthworks fortification, the Dimmock Line, protecting the city of Petersburg, Virginia, June 9, 1864, during the American Civil War. Because of the ragtag group of defenders involved, it is sometimes known as the Battle of Old Men and Young Boys.

Belva is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in west Nicholas County and north Fayette County, West Virginia, United States; while the CDP only includes the Nicholas County portion, the Fayette County portion is considered part of the community. The town is situated at the bottomland surrounding the convergence of Bells Creek with Twentymile Creek and, subsequently, Twenty Mile Creek with the Gauley River. Belva is also the location of the convergence of two state highways: West Virginia Route 16 and West Virginia Route 39.

Idlewild, also known as the Downman House, was a historic home located at Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was built in 1859; a fire in April 2003 destroyed most of the interior and collapsed the roof. It was a 2+1⁄2-story, Gothic Revival-style brick dwelling with an English basement and an irregular "T" shape with a center passage plan. The house was topped by a steep slate gable roof. Also on the property at present are three contributing brick dependencies and a contributing pet cemetery. During the American Civil War, Idlewild became a prominent landmark on May 4, 1863, during battle action related to the Chancellorsville campaign. On that evening Confederate General Robert E. Lee used the house as his headquarters, after being initially occupied that day by Federal troops of the Union Sixth Corps.
Harvey House, also known as the Dimmick-Harvey House, is a historic home located at Radford, Virginia. It was built in 1891–92 by J.K. Dimmock who started the Radford Foundry. When Dimmock left Radford, the house was inhabited by several families until the Harveys purchased the home, which is where its common name derives. The Harvey House is a large 2 1/2-story Queen Anne frame dwelling. Its rectangular plan by well known Philadelphia architect Frank Miles Day, features bays, an oriel window, and gabled dormers on a hipped roof. It also has a deep verandah with sinuous curves and shingled surfaces. Also on the property are a contributing early barn/workshop and a carriage house.
