Cities in Vietnam are identified by the government as settlements with considerable area and population that play important roles vis-a-vis politics, economy and culture. Status of cities falls into four categories: special, first class (I), second class (II), and third class (III). [1]
Centrally controlled cities (thành phố trực thuộc trung ương) or municipalities are cities with significant importance in terms of politics, economy and culture of Vietnam that are under direct control of the Vietnamese Central government. There are currently five centrally controlled municipalities. [2]

Lai Châu is a city in the Northwest region of Vietnam. It is the capital city of Lai Châu Province. The city borders Phong Thổ District, Sìn Hồ District và Tam Đường District.
Hòa Bình is a city in Vietnam. It is the capital of Hòa Bình Province, and is located 76 kilometres from Hanoi and 5 kilometres from the Đà River. The Battle of Hòa Bình was fought around the city from 1951 to 1952 during the First Indochina War.
Hòa Bình Dam, the largest hydroelectric dam in Vietnam until the 2012 completion of the Son La Dam, and also the largest in Southeast Asia, is located near the city. It was built by means of finances and experts from the Soviet Union.
Lào Cai ( ) is a city in the Northwest region of Vietnam. It is the capital of Lào Cai Province. The city borders Bảo Thắng District, Bát Xát District, Sa Pa and the city of Hekou Yao Autonomous County, in Yunnan province of southwest China. It lies at the junction of the Red River and the Nanxi River (Yunnan), approximately 160 miles (260 km) northwest of Hanoi.
Cẩm Phả is a city of Quảng Ninh Province in the north-east region of Vietnam. It is an important coal exporting port of Vietnam. As of 2019, the city had a population of 190,232. The city covers an area of 486 km2. The city was promoted from Cẩm Phả District by February 2012. Cẩm Phả was the site of one of the biggest coal mines in south of Asia which has been exploited for almost a century. The coal mine featured on a special commemorative Vietnam stamp in March 1959. Coal still forms the basis of Cẩm Phả's local economy, with other industries including quarrying, lime production, port, agriculture, forestry and fisheries.
