Madonna University is the first Catholic university in Nigeria. It was accredited by National Universities Commission. Madonna University Nigeria has three campuses that are located in Elele - Rivers State, Okija - Anambra State and Akpugo - Enugu State. The campuses have different Faculties with Departments. The Okija campus in Anambra state has the following Faculties: Management and Social Sciences; Arts and Education, and Law. [1] The Elele campus has Faculties of Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacology. The Akpugo campus has Faculty of Engineering. These campuses have their main libraries as well as libraries attached to Faculties and the Departments. The university graduates first class, second class and third class students. [2] The university also has a postgraduate program and part-time program that runs on Fridays and Saturdays.

History

Founded on 10 May 1999 in Okija, Anambra State, it was established by Father Edeh. [3] Edeh had founded Our Saviour Institute of Science and Technology in Enugu the previous year. [4] In 2004, under the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Madonna University's main campus was moved to Elele in Rivers State. [5]

Description

The university offers various courses including Law, Management, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy and Engineering. [5] The courses are accredited by the National Universities Commission, and the admission requirements are a minimum of 5 credits at not more than two sittings of the O-level schools Certificate Examination. [6]

The Elele campus has a University Teaching Hospital which is located a few kilometer away from the other campus at Okija. [7]

Campuses

Madonna university has Three campuses, Elele Campus, Okija campus [8] [9] and Akpugo campus. [10] Elele campus consists of medical related courses Medicine, Medical laboratory science, Pharmacy, Optometry, Nursing, Natural sciences etc. Okija campus being the home for Departments of Law, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business administration, Entrepreneurship, International Relations, Political science, Library and Information Science. [8] Akpugo campus in Enugu State, has the following Departments - Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. [10]

Academic activities

Madonna University Nigeria offers different academic activities. These include Matriculation, Convocation [2] and Scholastic activities. There are also National Universities Commission (NUC) activities for approval of departments, resource verifications and libraries.[ citation needed ] Other academic activities include, induction of students and graduates in various fields of learning. For instance, the Pharmacists Council Of Nigeria (PCN) inducted 236 fresh pharmacy graduands of Madonna University. [11] The Matriculation activity is done in every campus, every year after admission of new students. But Convocation is usually done collectively in Elele campus, which is the mother campus and the Headquarter where the seat of administration is located in Rivers state.

Library

This is the academic library located in Madonna University Nigeria to offer resources and access to information to the students and members of the academic environment. In the Madonna University Nigeria, there are libraries in the three campuses in Okija, Elele and Akpugo. [12] There are faculty libraries and departmental libraries. [13] In other words, every department in Madonna University library Nigeria has departmental ICT laboratories manned by a library assistant to enable equitable learning and supports. [14]

The university library in Okija Campus has an ICT section with resources and facilities that are made available and accessible to the students. [1] The resources in the university library include both print and non-print resources. The electronic information resources include e-journals, e-books, e-newspapers, online directories, e-projects, and databases. [15] The facilities include computers, hard disks, printers, scanners, photocopier, projector, land area network, wide area network and generators. [12]

However, there are still issues with the provision of facilities, automation of the library, good regular internet, regular power supply, searching skills of the students and adequacy of the computer. [14] [15] [12]

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, fondly called UNIZIK, is a federal university in Nigeria. It consists of two campuses in Anambra State. Its main campus is in Awka, while its other campus is in Nnewi. There are also other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. These include Agulu in Anaocha local government area and Ifite-Ogwuari in Ayamelum local government area in Anambra State. It has eleven public libraries, comprising three Divisional libraries with seven Branch/Community libraries and the headquarter that houses the Library Board – Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library, Awka. Onitsha Divisional Library, a Nigerian public library under Anambra State Library Board is located in the commercial city of Onitsha in the Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra North Senatorial District of Anambra State. It is a public library built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of Onitsha town and its environs. The Onitsha divisional library has a structure that was fully designed as a library unlike some of the public libraries in Anambra State that are housed in halls. It is in charge of Atani community library and reports directly to the Director of the Anambra State Library Board in Awka. The library serves the residents of Onitsha and its environs including children, students, youths, men, and women. It has facilities and information resources that include books, references, audiovisual resources, an e-library section, and an auditorium.

Ihembosi Community Library, is a Nigerian community branch library under the Anambra State Library Board. The public library is located in the Ihembosi community in the Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State, under Anambra South Senatorial District. It is one of the eleven public libraries in Anambra State built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of the host community and its environs. Ihembosi community library is under the Nnewi Divisional Library which reports directly to the Director of the Anambra State Library Board in Awka.

Abagana Divisional Library, a Nigeria public library under the Anambra State Library Board is located in Abagana town in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra Central Senatorial District in Anambra State, South-East Nigeria. It is one of the three Divisional libraries under the Anambra State Library Board. It supervises community libraries in Ajalli, Adazi Nnukwu, and Nkpologwu. It is built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of Abagana town and its environs. These include children, students, youths, men, and women. It has facilities and information resources that include books, references, audiovisual resources, and a hall. It also offers services like reader education, current awareness, document delivery, orientation services, and community information. However, the library has challenges of not being upgraded, inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, inadequate resources and facilities, issues of manpower/human resources, ICT, and internet connectivity. But then, these challenges can be mitigated if there will be a reorganization of the library through increased funding, ICT and manpower development, awareness creation, provision of internet and modern facilities, as well as reviews of the policies affecting public library systems in Nigeria.

Adazi Nnukwu Community Library is a Nigeria community branch library under the Anambra State Library Board. The public library is located in the Adazi Nnukwu community in the Aniocha local government area of Anambra State, under Anambra South Senatorial District. It is one of the eleven public libraries in Anambra State built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of the host community and its environs. Adazi Nnukwu community library is under the Abagana Divisional Library which reports directly to the Director of the Anambra State Library Board in Awka.
