Miss World 2001, the 51st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 16 November 2001 at the Super Bowl of Sun City Entertainment Centre in Sun City, South Africa. 93 contestants from all over the world competed for the title. Priyanka Chopra of India crowned her successor Agbani Darego of Nigeria at the end of the event. [1] This is the first time Nigeria won the title of Miss World.

Background

Selection of participants

Contestants from 93 countries and territories were selected to compete in the competition. Two of these delegates were designees after the original contestant withdrew.

Karol Inés de la Torre, Miss Mundo Colombia 2001, resigned due to accusations of her being married. She was replaced by Jeisyl Amparo Velez. [2] Miss Latvia 2001, Gunta Rudzīte was expected to compete in Miss World 2001, but was replaced by Miss Latvia 1999–2000 Dina Kalandārova due to undisclosed reasons. [3]

The 2001 edition saw the debut of Malawi, and the returns of Antigua and Barbuda, China, Guyana, Hawaii, Latvia, Macedonia, Nicaragua, Sint Maarten, Thailand, and Uganda. [4] Hawaii last competed in 1959, Antigua and Barbuda in 1991, China in 1994, Macedonia in 1996, Uganda in 1997, Nicaragua and 1998, and the others in 1999.

The Bahamas, Belarus, Chinese Taipei, Curacao, Denmark, Guatemala, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Nepal, Paraguay, and Sri Lanka withdrew. Miss Teen Bahamas 2001, Kiara Sherman had to cancel her participation in Miss World 2001 due to lack of time and preparation, and because she wasn't the official winner. [5] Miss Belarus 2000, Anna Stychinskaya did not compete due underage and lack of interest. [6] [7] Miss Denmark 2001, Maj Petersen did not compete due to Sponsorship problems. [8] Went to Miss World 2003 instead. [9] Miss Egypt World 2001 Sally Shaheen and Miss Uzbekistan 2001 Olesya Loshkareva did not participate in Miss World 2001 as scheduled due to the instability of the Middle East following the terrorist September 11 attacks in New York. [10] Miss Kazakhstan 2001, Gulmira Makhambetova did not compete for unknown reasons. [11] Miss Moldova 2001, Nadezhda Corcimari was supposed to participate in Miss World 2001, but due to her young age the Miss World officials refused her participation. [12] Miss Swaziland 2001, Glenda Mabuza was expected to compete, but the local organizers could not reach an agreement with the franchise. Chinese Taipei, Curacao, Guatemala, Honduras, Nepal, Paraguay, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Zambia withdrew after their respective organizations failed to hold a national competition or appoint a delegate. Miss World 2011, the 61st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 6 November 2011 at the Earls Court Two in London, United Kingdom. As part of the events, the contestants also travelled to Edinburgh, Scotland between 23 and 27 October. Alexandria Mills of the United States crowned her successor Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela at the end of the event, she is the sixth Venezuelan woman to win Miss World - currently tied with India for the most wins in the competition's history. Although over 120 delegates were expected to compete, problems regarding the timely acquisition of visas prevented several candidates from participating, thus reducing the final number to 113. Inese Šlesere is a Latvian politician, former model and beauty pageant titleholder. She was the runner-up in the 1999 Mrs. World and a contestant in Miss World 1991. She was a member of the Latvian Parliament from 2002 to 2011. Since 2010, she is the main organizer of the annual Latvian Prayers breakfast. She is married and has five children.

Miss World 2013, the 63rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 28 September 2013 at Bali International Convention Center, South Kuta, Bali, Indonesia. It was the first time in Southeast Asia and it also was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in a Muslim majority country. Contestants from 127 countries and territories competed in this year's Miss World pageant, marking the biggest turnout for any beauty pageant globally as of 2024. Yu Wenxia of China crowned her successor Megan Young of the Philippines at the end of the event, marking the only time to date that the Philippines has won the Miss World title. This victory also made the Philippines the third country to win all of the Big Four international beauty pageants.

Miss World 2014, the 64th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 14 December 2014 at the ExCeL London in London, United Kingdom. 121 contestants competed for the crown. Megan Young of the Philippines crowned her successor Rolene Strauss of South Africa at the end of the event. This is the second time that South Africa has won the title outright and the third time they have held the title.

Miss World 2015, the 65th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 19 December 2015 at the outdoor arena of the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China. 114 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown. Rolene Strauss of South Africa crowned her successor Mireia Lalaguna of Spain at the end of the event. It was the first time in the history of Miss World that Spain won the pageant.

Miss World 2021 was the 70th edition of the Miss World pageant, held at the Coca-Cola Music Hall in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 16 March 2022. The coronation was originally scheduled to be held on 16 December 2021 at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum. However, the pageant was rescheduled to 16 March 2022 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Puerto Rico.

Sheynnis Alondra Palacios Cornejo is a Nicaraguan model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2023. Having previously been crowned Miss Nicaragua 2023, she is the first Nicaraguan to win Miss Universe.
