Zhang Zilin of China crowned Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia as her successor at the end of the event. [1] [2]

Background

Date and location

Originally, the pageant was going to take place in Kyiv, Ukraine, but because of the ongoing 2008 Russo-Georgian diplomatic crisis in neighbouring South Ossetia, the Miss World Organization decided to move the pageant away from Eastern Europe. [3]

Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana was crowned by Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago at the end of the event. This edition marks the most recent time that a first-time entry of a country at Miss Universe has won and the third time in pageant's history, after Colombia in 1958 and Finland in 1952. This edition also saw a back-to-back victory by black women. 84 contestants competed in this year.

Miss World 1998, the 48th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 26 November 1998 at the Lake Berjaya Mahé Resort in Mahé Island, Seychelles. 86 delegates from around the world competed for the crown. Ronan Keating, then lead singer of Boyzone, and MTV's Eden Harel hosted the event. This year's winner, Israel's Linor Abargil, revealed days after the competition that she had been raped several weeks before the pageant. She was crowned by Miss World 1997, Diana Hayden of India.

Miss World 1997, the 47th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 22 November 1997 at the Plantation Club Seychelles in Baie Lazare, Seychelles. 86 delegates competed for the coveted crown. At the end of the event, India's Diana Hayden came out victorious. Hayden went on to win the Miss World 1997 pageant at the age of 24 crowned by Miss World 1996, Irene Skliva. It was the first time the Miss World pageant was held in the Seychelles. She became the third Indian woman to win Miss World since Reita Faria in 1966 and Aishwarya Rai in 1994.

Ksenia Vladimirovna Sukhinova is a Russian tv host, model and former beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss World 2008. She was the second Russian woman to be crowned Miss World, and had previously been crowned Miss Russia 2007.

Tatiana Kotova of Rostov-on-Don crowned her successor Ksenia Sukhinova of Tyumen as the new Miss Russia. Riyo Mori and Zhang Zilin participated in the event. Ksenia Sukhinova competed in the Miss World 2008 pageant, and was crowned the winner. Although she was not the winner of the national pageant, the Miss Russia organization decided to send the first runner-up, Vera Krasova, to the Miss Universe 2008 pageant held in Nha Trang, Vietnam, where she made it to the top five finalists.

Gabrielle Walcott is a Trinidadian artist, model, charity worker and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Trinidad and Tobago 2008 and placed as the second runner-up in Miss World 2008.

Camila Vezzoso is a model from Uruguay and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Uruguay 2012. She also represented Uruguay in the 2012 Miss Universe pageant. Following the contests, she moved to Paris and is currently pursuing a modeling career.
