Mount Florida (Scottish Gaelic : Cnoc Florida) is an area in the south-east of the city of Glasgow, Scotland.
The Glasgow district of Mount Florida originated on the "Lands of Mount Floridon", which were described in detail when offered for sale at auction on 21 September 1814. The notice in the city's Herald newspaper described the estate as consisting of upwards of 15 acres (6.1 ha), with a mansion house containing two dwellings and gardens well stocked with fruit trees. [1]
Contemporary maps from the 1850s show the old house renamed as "Mount Florida, (Ruin)". It was entered from Prospecthill Road and consisted of two semi-detached dwellings and surrounding gardens.
Much of the present suburb is situated in the area to the south of the old house. This ground was part of the "Lands of Clincart", which were put up for sale by auction on 28 June 1836. A farmhouse and 95 acres (38 ha) of land were offered for potential residential development. [2] The area was incorporated into the city officially in 1891. [3]
Clincart Farm itself was purchased by Queen's Park F.C., who adapted and incorporated the buildings into facilities for Lesser Hampden (their reserve team ground) in the 1920s. [4] Around a century later it was reckoned to be the oldest existing building in the world directly used for football activities; [5] [6] however it was never listed and (with a new pavilion having been built in 2013) [7] [8] had fallen into some disrepair by the end of 2021, at which point the club decided to demolish it as part of the work to upgrade Lesser Hampden to their main stadium. [9] [10] [11]
Mount Florida is served by the Mount Florida railway station which lies upon the Cathcart Circle railway line. The area is home to Langside College and the New Victoria Hospital which opened in 2009 on the fringe of Queen's Park. [12] Primarily a residential area, the housing stock largely comprises traditional tenemental buildings with the addition of two of Glasgow's high rise structures (Battlefield Court and Langside Court), which dominated much of the 1960s housing regeneration in the city. The main road through the area is Cathcart Road, a major route through Glasgow's south side.
Scotland's national football stadium, Hampden Park, is located off Cathcart Road in the heart of Mount Florida. The 51,866-seater stadium, opened in 1903 and significantly renovated in the 1990s, is home to the Scottish Football Association, and to Queen's Park F.C. until 2021. The stadium has also played host to numerous large music events and was the Track and field events stadium for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Mount Florida is also home to numerous lawn bowling clubs, including Glasgow's Indoor Centre. The local green area of Cathkin Park in the north of the neighbourhood beside Holyrood Secondary School and sports centre (officially in Crosshill) was also once a football stadium, home of the now defunct club Third Lanark and of Queen's Park prior to that.
Mount Florida is in the Langside ward for Glasgow City Council and since May 2022 is represented by Councillors Susan Aitken, Holly Bruce, Stephen Docherty and Paul Leinster. The neighbourhood lies within the Glasgow Cathcart Scottish Parliamentary constituency; the sitting MSP is James Dornan. Mount Florida is in the Glasgow South UK Parliament constituency; the sitting MP is Stewart McDonald.
As part of the system of local democratic representation there is an active community council. [13]
Creation Records founder Alan McGee and Primal Scream vocalist Bobby Gillespie both grew up in the area and attended Kings Park Secondary School in nearby Simshill. Mount Florida has also produced an eponymous Glasgow musical group, who were signed to Matador Records. They have to date one album by the title 'Arrived Phoenix', released 30 January 2001. [14] The Glasgow-based novelist, J. David Simons, grew up in the nearby Kings Park district and attended Mount Florida Primary School in the late 1950s.[ citation needed ]
Mount Florida Primary School is situated between Cathcart Road and Carmunnock Road. [15] The school was designed for Cathcart School Board by H & D Barclay and erected in 1895–1897.
Hampden Park is a football stadium in the Mount Florida area of Glasgow, Scotland, which is the national stadium of football in Scotland and home of the Scotland national football team. Hampden Park is owned by the Scottish Football Association (SFA), and regularly hosts the latter stages of the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. The largest stadium by capacity when opened in 1903, an accolade the stadium held until 1950, Hampden Park is the 50th largest football stadium in Europe, the 11th largest in the United Kingdom, and the second largest football stadium in Scotland. The stadium retains all attendance records recorded in European football.
Cathkin Park is a municipal park in Glasgow, Scotland. The park is maintained by the city's parks department, and it is a public place where football is still played. The park contains the site of the second Hampden Park, previously home to the football clubs Queen's Park and Third Lanark. The site of the original Hampden Park is just to the west.
Shawlands is a Southside suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, located two miles south of the River Clyde. The area, considered the "Heart of the Southside", is known for its independent restaurants and cafés, art scene, public parks, period terraces, and red and blond sandstone tenements. Shawlands was named one of the best places to live in Scotland in 2022 and 2023 by The Sunday Times, and one of the world's coolest neighbourhoods by Time Out Magazine with judges describing it as "the city's best area to live and socialise”. It is located between Pollok Country Park – the home of the Burrell Collection and Pollok House – and the acclaimed Victorian park Queen's Park.
Queen's Park is a park situated on the south side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, between Strathbungo, Shawlands, Battlefield, Mount Florida, and Crosshill The 60-hectare (148-acre) park lies about 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) south of the city centre, and gives its name to a nearby railway station and several other local businesses and institutions, including the football team Queen's Park F.C.

The Cathcart Circle Lines form a mostly suburban railway route linking Glasgow (Central) to Cathcart via a circular line, with branches to Newton and Neilston, on the south bank of the River Clyde. They are part of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport network.
Crossmyloof is an area on the south side of Glasgow situated between the districts of Pollokshields, Strathbungo and Shawlands in Scotland.
Crosshill is an area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated south of the River Clyde. It was an independent police burgh from 1871 to 1891 before being annexed by the City of Glasgow.
Langside is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde, and lies east of Shawlands, south of Queens Park, west of Cathcart and north of Newlands. The district is residential and primarily middle-class, and has become an increasingly fashionable address in recent years. Housing stock is mainly of the Victorian tenement type, along with some townhouses of the same period.
Mount Florida railway station is a staffed island platform station on the Cathcart Circle. It serves the Mount Florida and Battlefield areas of Glasgow, Scotland and can get busy on match days as it is nearby to Hampden Park football stadium. Services are provided by ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
King's Park is a district in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated south of the River Clyde and borders the Glasgow areas of Croftfoot, Cathcart, Simshill, Mount Florida and Toryglen and the neighbourhood of Bankhead in the adjoining town of Rutherglen.
Lesser Hampden is a football stadium in Mount Florida, Glasgow, Scotland, owned by Queen's Park F.C. and located immediately beside the western end of the national stadium, Hampden Park. Since 2023 its sponsored name has been The City Stadium.
Hampden Park in Glasgow is the primary home stadium for the Scotland national football team. This has been the case since 1906, soon after it opened. The present site of Hampden Park is the third location to bear that name and both the previous locations also hosted Scotland games. Scotland have also played many of their home games in other stadiums throughout their history, both in friendly matches and for competitive tournaments.
The Cathcart District Railway was proposed to serve the arising demand for suburban residential travel on the south side of Glasgow, Scotland. It was planned as a loop running to and from Glasgow Central station, but at first only the eastern arm, to Cathcart via Queens Park, was built, opening in 1886. The western arm was opened in 1894 and trains operated round the loop. A frequent passenger train service was operated, and there was also a limited goods and mineral operation.

Newlands/Auldburn is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Situated south of the city and the River Clyde, it is represented by 3 members as of May 2022, one each from the Scottish National Party, Scottish Labour, and Scottish Green Party.
Langside is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and returned four members.
Hampden Park was a football ground in Crosshill, Renfrewshire. The home ground of Queen's Park from 1873 until 1883, it was the first of three stadiums to bear the same name, and hosted the first-ever Scottish Cup final in 1874.
