An associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States is any member of the Supreme Court of the United States other than the chief justice of the United States. The number of associate justices is eight,as set by the Judiciary Act of 1869.

She was both the first woman nominated and the first confirmed to the court. Virginia (1996),Olmstead v. L.C. (1999),Friends of the Earth,Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services,Inc. (2000),and City of Sherrill v. Oneida Indian Nation of New York (2005).

Dana Anderson Fabe is an American lawyer,retired judge,and mediator. She served as a justice of the Alaska Supreme Court from 1996 to 2016,including three terms as the court's chief justice. William Scott Bales is the former Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court in 2005 by Governor Janet Napolitano through Arizona's merit selection system. He was elected by his fellow justices as Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court,to replace Rebecca White Berch,effective June 27,2014. Bales served as Arizona's chief justice until July 31,2019.
