The Jersey City mayoral election of 2001 was held on May 8, 2001. The mayor is popularly elected in a nonpartisan general election. The incumbent Mayor of Jersey City, Bret Schundler, did not run for re-election.

A runoff held on June 5, 2001. Glenn Cunningham was elected, becoming the first African-American mayor of Jersey City. [1] His opponent in the run-off was Thomas A. DeGise, [2] who later became Hudson County Executive. [3] [4] [5] It was one of the most expensive local races in New Jersey history. [6]

Cunningham died in office before completing his term. [1] [7]

Gerald McCann, who had served two non-consecutive terms as Mayor of Jersey City before being convicted of fraud in a savings-and-loan scam, attempted to file a petition to run but was barred from doing so. [9]

Anthony R. Cucci was an American educator and Democratic party politician who served as the 40th Mayor of Jersey City from July 1, 1985, until June 30, 1989. Cucci served on the City Council from 1977 to 1981, and was a member of the Jersey City Board of Education from 2000 until 2009.

2009 Jersey City mayoral election

The 2009 Jersey City non-partisan mayoral election occurred on May 12, 2009. Incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy (Democrat) won re-election. Former Mayor Bret Schundler (Republican) was going to run, but dropped out in January 2009 for financial reasons. Healy needed a 51% vote to hold off a second round. Healy won the election with 53% vote against 4 other candidates. The voter turnout was only 30,658.

Martin Luther King Drive station

Martin Luther King Drive is a station of the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail in the Jackson Hill neighborhood of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Located on the east side of Martin Luther King Drive near the intersection with Virginia Avenue, the station is a two side platform, two track structure on the West Side Avenue branch of the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail. Train service through Martin Luther King Drive station goes from West Side Avenue in Jersey City to the Tonnelle Avenue station in North Bergen. The station is accessible for those with disabilities as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 with ramps to the train-level platform. Martin Luther King Drive station opened on April 17, 2000 along with the rest of the West Side Avenue branch as part of the original operating segment.

The elections coincided with other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. Democrats won 4 seats from Republicans and changed control from 7–5 for Democrats to 11–1 for Democrats, the lowest number of seats Republicans have won in the state since 1912. However, Representative Jeff Van Drew of the 2nd District would later change his party affiliation from Democratic to Republican in December 2019.

2017 Georgias 6th congressional district special election

A special election to determine the member of the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 6th congressional district was held on April 18, 2017, with a runoff held two months later on June 20. Republican Karen Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff in the runoff vote, 51.8% to 48.2%. Handel succeeded Tom Price, who resigned from the seat following his confirmation as United States Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump Administration. The runoff election was necessary when no individual candidate earned the majority of votes in the election on April 18. Ossoff received 48.1% of the vote in the first round, followed by Handel with 19.8%.

Hudson County Executive

The County Executive of Hudson County, New Jersey, United States is the chief officer of the county's executive branch who oversees the administration of county government and works in collaboration with the nine-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, which acts in a legislative role. The New Jersey Superior Court had subsumed and replaced county courts in 1983. The office of the county executive is in the Hudson County Courthouse in the county seat, Jersey City.
