Inabtanin is an extinct genus of azhdarchoid pterosaurs from the Late Cretaceous Muwaqqar Formation of Jordan. The genus contains a single species, I. alarabia, known from a partial skeleton. Inabtanin represents one of the most complete pterosaur taxa known from the Afro-Arabia region. [1]

Discovery and naming

The Inabtanin holotype specimen, YUPC-INAB-6-001–010, was discovered in phosphate mines representing latest Maastrichtian-aged [2] sediments of the Muwaqqar Formation ('Inab-6' locality) near Russeifa, Jordan. The specimen was found in partial articulation, consisting of much of the upper and lower jaws, four partial cervical vertebrae, the left scapulocoracoid and humerus, and much of the right forelimb (comprising the humerus, radius, ulna, fourth metacarpal, and first wing phalanx. [1] The fossil material was first reported in a conference abstract in 2018 before its formal description. [3]

In 2024, Rosenbach et al. described Inabtanin alarabia as a new genus and species of azhdarchoid pterosaurs based on these fossil remains. The generic name, Inabtanin, is derived from Tal Inab (meaning "grape hill" in Arabic)—the name of a notably grape-hued hill near the type locality—combined with "tanin", the Arabic word for "dragon". The name further makes use of the English word "tannin"—derived from the French "tanin"—which concerns coloration. As such, the intended meaning is both "grape dragon" and "grape-colored". The specific name, alarabia, references the Arabian Peninsula. [1] [4]

Based on fusion of the scapulocoracoid and appendicular bone epiphyses, the Inabtanin holotype can be identified as an adult individual. It is a large pterosaur, with an estimated wingspan of 5 metres (16 ft), [1] slightly larger than the holotype of Quetzalcoatlus lawsoni . [5] In comparison, fossils found near the Inabtanin holotype assigned to the azhdarchid Arambourgiania belong to animals with a larger wingspan of about 10 metres (33 ft). [1]

Some characteristics observed in Inabtanin, including the toothless beak, large body size, humerus morphology, and internal wing bone structure, are typically expected in azhdarchid taxa. However, the neck vertebrae are not extremely elongated, and there are no nutrient foramina on the jaw bones. These traits are more similar to non-azhdarchid members of the Azhdarchoidea, suggesting a more basal position for this genus. [1]

Paleoecology

Using CT scans, Rosenbach et al. (2024) were able to observe the internal structure of the three-dimensionally preserved Inabtanin holotype bones. They found that—in contrast to the spiraling ridges in the humerus of the coeval ArambourgianiaInabtanin demonstrates a densely packed crisscrossed arrangement of struts. Based on comparisons with extant birds, the flight patterns of the two extinct pterosaur taxa could then be deduced. Vultures and seabirds, which are known for their soaring capabilities, tend to have spiraling structures similar to Arambourgiania, suggesting it also primarily flew this way. The more conventional form of the Inabtanin bones is comparable to flapping birds. [1] [4]

Azhdarchidae is a family of pterosaurs known primarily from the Late Cretaceous Period, though an isolated vertebra apparently from an azhdarchid is known from the Early Cretaceous as well. Azhdarchids are mainly known for including some of the largest flying animals discovered, but smaller cat-size members have also been found. Originally considered a sub-family of Pteranodontidae, Nesov (1984) named the Azhdarchinae to include the pterosaurs Azhdarcho, Quetzalcoatlus, and Titanopteryx. They were among the last known surviving members of the pterosaurs, and were a rather successful group with a worldwide distribution. Previously it was thought that by the end of the Cretaceous, most pterosaur families except for the Azhdarchidae disappeared from the fossil record, but recent studies indicate a wealth of pterosaurian fauna, including pteranodontids, nyctosaurids, tapejarids and several indeterminate forms. In several analyses, some taxa such as Navajodactylus, Bakonydraco and Montanazhdarcho were moved from Azhdarchidae to other clades.

Arambourgiania is an extinct genus of azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous period of Jordan, and possibly the United States and Morocco. With a wingspan of around 10 metres (33 ft), Arambourgiania was among the largest members of its family, the Azhdarchidae, and it is also one of the largest flying animals ever known.

<i>Hatzegopteryx</i> Genus of large azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous

Hatzegopteryx is a genus of azhdarchid pterosaur found in the late Maastrichtian deposits of the Densuş Ciula Formation, an outcropping in Transylvania, Romania. It is known only from the type species, Hatzegopteryx thambema, named by Buffetaut et al. in 2002 based on parts of the skull and humerus. Additional specimens, including a neck vertebra, were later placed in the genus, representing a range of sizes. The largest of these remains indicate it was among the biggest pterosaurs, with an estimated wingspan of 10 to 12 metres.

Bennettazhia is a genus of tapejaromorph pterosaur which lived during the Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous from what is now the Hudspeth Formation of the state of Oregon in the United States. Although originally identified as a species of the pteranodontoid pterosaur Pteranodon, Bennettazhia is now thought to have been a different animal. The type and only species is B. oregonensis.

<i>Phosphatodraco</i> Late Cretaceous genus of pterosaur

Phosphatodraco is a genus of azhdarchid pterosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous of what is now Morocco. In 2000, a pterosaur specimen consisting of five cervical (neck) vertebrae was discovered in the Ouled Abdoun Phosphatic Basin. The specimen was made the holotype of the new genus and species Phosphatodraco mauritanicus in 2003; the genus name means "dragon from the phosphates", and the specific name refers to the region of Mauretania. Phosphatodraco was the first Late Cretaceous pterosaur known from North Africa, and the second pterosaur genus described from Morocco. It is one of the only known azhdarchids preserving a relatively complete neck, and was one of the last known pterosaurs. Additional cervical vertebrae have since been assigned to the genus, and it has been suggested that fossils of the pterosaur Tethydraco represent wing elements of Phosphatodraco.

Azhdarchoidea is a group of pterosaurs within the suborder Pterodactyloidea, more specifically within the group Ornithocheiroidea. Pterosaurs belonging to this group lived throughout the Early and Late Cretaceous periods, with one tentative member, Tendaguripterus, that lived in the Late Jurassic period. The largest azhdarchoids include members of the family Azhdarchidae, examples of these are Quetzalcoatlus, Hatzegopteryx, and Arambourgiania. The Azhdarchoidea has been recovered as either closely related to the Ctenochasmatoidea, as the sister taxon of the Pteranodontoidea within the Ornithocheiroidea, or within the Tapejaroidea, which in turn was also within the Ornithocheiroidea.

Tapejaroidea is a group of pterosaurs belonging to the clade Ornithocheiroidea. Tapejaroids lived from the Early to Late Cretaceous periods, with one possible member, Tendaguripterus, extending the fossil range to the Late Jurassic period. Tapejaroidea contains two groups, the Dsungaripteridae and the Azhdarchoidea, which in turn includes the azhdarchids, the group that contains some of the largest flying animals. Argentinadraco is an extinct genus of azhdarchoid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous Portezuelo Formation of Argentina. It contains a single species, A. barrealensis, named in 2017 by Alexander Kellner and Jorge Calvo. Argentinadraco is unusual for bearing a bottom jaw with a concave bottom edge, as well as a pair of ridges and depressions on the top surface. These features distinguish it from all other azhdarchoid groups, complicating its assignment, but it may belong to the Chaoyangopteridae. The ridges on the lower jaw may have been used to feed on small invertebrates in loose sediment within the system of lakes and rivers that it resided in.

Barbaridactylus is a nyctosaurid pterosaur from the Ouled Abdoun Basin of Morocco, a basin that dates back to the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous. It was published in 2018 by paleontologists Nicholas R. Longrich, David M. Martill, and Brian Andres. In the same publication, two other pterosaurs from the same basin were described: Alcione and Simurghia. The type and only species is B. grandis.

<i>Wellnhopterus</i> Genus of azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous

Wellnhopterus is an azhdarchid pterosaur recovered from the Late Cretaceous Javelina Formation in Texas that was previously identified as a thalassodromine. It consists of a set of upper and lower jaws, as well as some cervical vertebrae and a fragmentary long bone. In July 2021, the jaws were given the genus name "Javelinadactylus", with the type and only species as "J. sagebieli"; however, this article has now been retracted. In a paper published in December 2021, the complete holotype was independently named Wellnhopterus, with the only species being W. brevirostris. As of 2022, this is the formal name of this pterosaur.

<i>Thanatosdrakon</i> Genus of azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous

Thanatosdrakon is a genus of quetzalcoatline azhdarchid pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous Plottier Formation of the Neuquén Basin in western Argentina. The genus name is derived from the Greek words thanatos (=death) and drakon (=dragon), while the specific name is a Quechuan word meaning "flying serpent" and refers to the Incan deity Amaru. The type and only species is Thanatosdrakon amaru, known from two specimens consisting of several well-preserved axial and appendicular bones including material previously undescribed in giant azhdarchids. Thanatosdrakon is one of the oldest known members of the Quetzalcoatlinae. T. amaru lived from about 90 to 86 million years ago.

The Muwaqqar Chalk-Marl Formation or Muwaqqar Formation is a Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) and early Paleogene-aged geological formation in Jordan, cropping out across the Jordanian Highlands from north to south. It is the geological formation containing Jordan's famous oil shales, which are among the largest in the world. Some outcrops of the formation contain extremely well-preserved fossils, making it a lagerstätte.
