Cratonopterus (meaning "craton wing") is an extinct genus of ctenochasmatid pterosaurs from the Early Cretaceous Huajiying Formation of China. The genus contains a single species, C. huabei, known from a partial skeleton. Cratonopterus represents the first named pterosaur from the Huajiying Formation. [1]

Discovery and naming

The Cratonopterus holotype specimen, IVPP V 14935, was discovered in sediments of the Huajiying Formation in Fengning County, Hebei Province, China. The incomplete, partially articulated specimen consists of the last three cervical vertebrae, nine dorsal vertebrae, the sternum, the right scapulocoracoid, a partial right wing, gastralia, and ribs. In 2023, Jiang et al. described Cratonopterus huabei as a new genus and species of ctenochasmatid pterosaur based on these fossil remains. The generic name, "Cratonopterus", combines a reference to cratons, derived from the Greek word "kratos", after the geological feature where the specimen was found in, with the Greek "pterus", meaning "wing". The specific name "huabei" means "north China" in Chinese pinyin, in reference to the North China Craton. [1]

Description

Cratonopterus is a medium-sized ctenochasmatid, with an estimated wingspan of around 1.8 metres (5.9 ft). The holotype individual was likely an actively growing subadult when it died, close to being fully grown. The first wing phalanx exhibits a large pneumatic foramen. Although this feature is also seen in members of the Ornithocheiroidea, Jiang et al. interpret it as an autapomorphy, or unique feature, of Cratonopterus within the Ctenochasmatidae. The coracoid bone of the shoulder does not have an expansion where it touches the scapula. This feature is also unique, as an expansion is present in other ctenochasmatids. [1]

Classification

Due to the elongated wing metatarsal of the specimen, Jiang et al. suggested that Cratonopterus can clearly be classified as a pterodactyloid. It can further be assigned to the Ctenochasmatidae as the proportions of the postcranial remains are most similar to members of this clade such as Forfexopterus , Elanodactylus , and Eosipterus . Paleoenvironment

The Cratonopterus holotype was discovered in layers of the Huajiying Formation, which dates to the middle Valanginian to middle Hauterivian ages of the Early Cretaceous period. [1] Cratonopterus is the first pterosaur species named from this formation. However, an incomplete wing and almost complete right foot of a pterosaur have previously been described from the same locality and interpreted as belonging to an ornithocheiroid, indicating some diversity in pterosaur taxa. [2] Fossils of non-avian dinosaurs ( Jinfengopteryx and Xunmenglong ), enantiornithine birds ( Cruralispennia , Eopengornis , Jibeinia , Protopteryx , Shenqiornis , Vescornis ), the ornithuromorph bird Archaeornithura , various fish, and the spinicaudatan (clam shrimp) Yanjiestheria have also been described from members of the Huajiying Formation. <i>Forfexopterus</i> Genus of ctenochasmatid pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous

Forfexopterus is a genus of ctenochasmatid pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in China. It contains a single species, F. jeholensis, named from a mostly complete skeleton by Shunxing Jiang and colleagues in 2016. A second specimen, consisting of a wing, was described in 2020. While the first specimen is larger, it shows signs of being less mature than the second specimen, indicating that the developmental trajectories of Forfexopterus were variable. Like other ctenochasmatids, Forfexopterus had a long, low skull filled with many slender teeth; unlike other members of the group, however, it did not have a spatula-shaped snout tip or crests, and its teeth were more curved. A single characteristic distinguishes Forfexopterus from all other members of the wider group Archaeopterodactyloidea: of the four phalanx bones in its wing finger, the first was shorter than the second but longer than the third.

<i>Liaodactylus</i> Genus of ctenochasmatid pterosaur from the Late Jurassic

Liaodactylus is a genus of filter-feeding ctenochasmatid pterosaur from the Jurassic of China. The genus contains one species, L. primus, described by Zhou et al. in 2017. As an adaptation to filter-feeding, Liaodactylus had approximately 150 long, comb-like teeth packed closely together. It is both the earliest known ctenochasmatid and the first filter-feeding pterosaur from the Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation. Later and more specialized ctenochasmatids differ from Liaodactylus in having longer snouts, smaller openings in the skull, and more teeth. Within the Ctenochasmatidae, Liaodactylus was most closely related to the European Ctenochasma.

Keresdrakon is an extinct genus of azhdarchoid pterosaur from the Goio-Erê Formation of Brazil, which dates back to the Early Cretaceous period, 125 to 100.5 million years ago. Keresdrakon contains a single species, Keresdrakon vilsoni.

<i>Xunmenglong</i> Extinct genus of dinosaurs

Xunmenglong is a genus of compsognathid theropod dinosaur from the Huajiying Formation from Hebei Province in China. The type and only species is Xunmenglong yinliangis. The holotype material consists of a pelvis, tail base and hindlimbs that had previously been part of a chimera containing three different animals. The animal is described as being the smallest known member of Compsognathidae, being about the size of the sub-adult Scipionyx holotype specimen or approximately 0.5 meters in length.

Ruixinia is an extinct genus of somphospondylan titanosauriform dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous (Barremian) Yixian Formation of China. The genus contains a single species, Ruixinia zhangi. The Ruixinia holotype is a partial articulated skeleton with the most complete series of caudal vertebrae known from any Asian titanosauriform.
