Each state in the United States has a senior military officer, as the state adjutant general, who is the de facto commander of a state's military forces, including the National Guard residing within the state, the state's naval militia, and any state defense forces. This officer is known as TAG, and is subordinated to the chief executive. They do not have authority over police forces, only military forces.
Daniel Robert Hokanson is a retired United States Army general who last served as the 29th chief of the National Guard Bureau. He previously served as the 21st director of the Army National Guard. His previous military assignments include serving as vice chief of the National Guard Bureau, deputy commander of United States Northern Command, adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard, and commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Just Cause.
John Stephen Kolasheski is a retired United States Army officer who was the commanding general of V Corps from 2020 to 2024.
John Michael “Mike” Murray is an active United States Army general, the first commanding general of United States Army Futures Command, a new four-star Army Command headquartered in Austin, Texas. Murray was previously the G-8, a deputy chief of staff to the Chief of Staff of the United States Army. As G-8, Murray served as the principal advisor to the Chief of Staff for materiel requirements, as military counterpart to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics, and technology.
Ronald Patrick "Ron" Clark is a United States Army general who has served as the commanding general of United States Army Pacific since 8 November 2024. He most recently served as the senior military assistant to the secretary of defense from 2022 to 2024. He previously commanded United States Army Central from 2021 to 2022. He also served as Chief of Staff, United States Indo-Pacific Command, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division, and before that, as Chief of Staff, United States Army Pacific.
David A. Lesperance is a retired United States Army major general who last served as the director of operations of United Nations Command, ROK/US Combined Forces Command and United States Forces Korea from June 2023 to July 2024. He most recently served as commanding general of the 2nd Infantry Division from May 18, 2021, to May 15, 2023. Prior to that, he served as commanding general of the Fort Irwin National Training Center from September 2019 to April 2021.
David Matthew Hodne is a United States Army lieutenant general who has served as the deputy commanding general for futures and concepts of United States Army Futures Command and director of the Futures and Concepts Center since January 9, 2024. He most recently served as the commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson from 2021 to 2023. Before that assignment, he served as the commander of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve from 2022 to 2023. Charles R. Hamilton is a former United States Army general who last served as the commanding general of United States Army Materiel Command from 16 March 2023 to 22 March 2024. He previously served as the deputy chief of staff for logistics of the Army Staff from 6 April 2022 to 16 March 2023. Prior to this he was the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics of the United States Army from May 2021 to March 2022, and the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Operations of the United States Army Materiel Command from July 2020 to April 2021.
