Martharaptor is a genus of therizinosauroid theropod dinosaurs from the Early Cretaceous of the Cedar Mountain Formation in Utah. They can be distinguished from other therizinosauroids by means of several features of the skeleton (particularly the hands and feet) which were intermediate between early therizinosaurs such as Falcarius and Beipiaosaurus , and more "advanced" members of the group like therizinosaurids. The deep and homogeneous hand claws clearly differ from the case in early therizinosauroids, but the foot has not yet acquired the robust morphology of therizinosaurids.

Discovery and naming

The holotype specimen, UMNH VP 21400, hails from the Hayden-Corbett site of the Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah, approximately eight miles southeast from the city of Green River. The specimen was unearthed from a higher stratigraphic level (upper Yellow Cat Member) than Falcarius . The generic name, Martharaptor, is in honor to the paleontologist assistant Martha C. Hayden who helped in the discovery of the site, and the specific name, greenriverensis, is a reference to the Green River. [2]

The specimen includes fragments of vertebrae, a scapula, forelimb and hindlimb bones, and an ischium. It also includes well-preserved manual unguals. Manual and pedal morphology show that the specimen is distinct from other theropods from the Cedar Mountain Formation and from other previously described therizinosauroids. [2]

A pair of fragmentary elongated bones preserved next to each other may represent the radius and ulna of the antebrachium. Hand and finger bones are more well-preserved, with strongly ginglymoidal (pulley-shaped) joint surfaces. The manual unguals (hand claws) are very distinctive. Their height is greater than their length, and they are strongly curved. One of the preserved unguals is larger than the others, and it may represent the claw of the first finger. Other unguals are as large as each other, indicating that the second and third fingers had claws of equal size. The deep unguals of similar shape differs from the condition in other early therizinosauroids, which have longer unguals which differ in shape between different fingers. [2]

Hindlimbs

Several bones of the left foot are preserved. The first metatarsal thins towards the ankle, similar to most theropods but unlike therizinosaurids, indicating that the first toe did not contact the ground. In conjunction with this, the claw of the first toe is smaller than those of the other toes. On the other hand, the toe claws are all deep and curved, as in other therizinosauroids. The fourth metatarsal is beveled (slightly slopes to the side) compared to the rest of the foot. This is intermediate between Falcarius, which has no slope, and therizinosaurids, which have a fourth metatarsal angled at 90 degrees to the rest of the foot. None of the metatarsals are ginglymoidal, but the toe bones are. [2]

The only preserved bone of the pectoral girdle is the left scapula (shoulder blade). This bone has a hatchet-like shape, expanded near the shoulder as in other therizinosauroids which preserve a scapula and measures about 15 cm (150 mm) long. The pelvis (hip) preserves fragments of the pubis and part of the ischium, which is very flattened (from the side) near the hip socket. [2]

Three vertebral fragments are preserved. These include a strip of bone from the upper portion of a cervical (neck) vertebra, the centrum (main body) of a dorsal (back) vertebra, and the lower portion of a vertebra believed to be a distal caudal (i.e. from the tip of the tail). The cervical fragment shows that the prezygapophysis (front joint plate) is not flexed, indicating that the specimen was not a dromaeosaurid. Each side of the dorsal vertebra possessed a hypapophysis (rib facet) at its lower front corner and a pit located at the center of the side. [2]

Classification

Phylogenetic analysis placed Martharaptor within Therizinosauroidea as the sister taxon to the Alxasaurus + Therizinosauridae group, although support for this placement is weak. [2] Nevertheless, Hartman et al. (2019) performed a phylogenetic analysis for the Therizinosauria corroborating the initial placement of Martharaptor. [3]

Segnosaurus is a genus of therizinosaurid dinosaur that lived in what is now southeastern Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous, about 102–86 million years ago. Multiple incomplete but well-preserved specimens were discovered in the Gobi Desert in the 1970s, and in 1979 the genus and species Segnosaurus galbinensis were named. The generic name Segnosaurus means "slow lizard" and the specific name galbinensis refers to the Galbin region. Therizinosaurus is a genus of very large therizinosaurid that lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now the Nemegt Formation around 70 million years ago. It contains a single species, Therizinosaurus cheloniformis. The first remains of Therizinosaurus were found in 1948 by a Mongolian field expedition at the Gobi Desert and later described by Evgeny Maleev in 1954. The genus is only known from a few bones, including gigantic manual unguals, from which it gets its name, and additional findings comprising fore and hindlimb elements that have been discovered during the 1960s–1980s.

<i>Beipiaosaurus</i> Extinct genus of dinosaurs

Beipiaosaurus is a genus of therizinosauroid theropod dinosaurs that lived in Asia during the Early Cretaceous in the Yixian Formation. The first remains were found in 1996 and formally described in 1999. Before the discovery of Yutyrannus, they were among the heaviest dinosaurs known from direct evidence to be feathered. Beipiaosaurus is known from three reported specimens preserving numerous impressions of feather structures that allowed to determine the feathering color which turned out to be brownish.

The genus is known from multiple specimens ranging from immature to fully-grown individuals.

Nanshiungosaurus is a genus of therizinosaurid that lived in what is now Asia during the Late Cretaceous of South China. The type species, Nanshiungosaurus brevispinus, was first discovered in 1974 and described in 1979 by Dong Zhiming. It is represented by a single specimen preserving most of the cervical and dorsal vertebrae with the pelvis. A supposed and unlikely second species, "Nanshiungosaurus" bohlini, was found in 1992 and described in 1997. It is also represented by vertebrae but this species however, differs in geological age and lacks authentic characteristics compared to the type, making its affinity to the genus unsupported.

<i>Suzhousaurus</i> Extinct genus of dinosaurs

Suzhousaurus is a genus of large therizinosauroid dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China. The genus is known from two specimens discovered on the Xiagou Formation and Zhonggou Formation—which are situated in the Xinminbao Group. These findings were made during field-works in 1999 and 2004. Though Suzhousaurus is known from these two specimens, an earlier named and described therizinosauroid from the adjacent basin, "Nanshiungosaurus" bohlini, may be synonymous with the former. However, Suzhousaurus can not be compared to this species due to non-overlapping material and the loss of the same. Moreover, this synonymy will result in Suzhousaurus bohlini with "N". bohlini having priority.

Theropod paleopathology is the study of injury and disease in theropod dinosaurs. In 2001, Ralph E. Molnar published a survey of pathologies in theropod dinosaur bone that uncovered pathological features in 21 genera from 10 theropod families. Pathologies have been seen on most theropod body parts, with the most common sites of preserved injury and disease being the ribs and tail vertebrae. The least common sites of preserved pathology are the weight-bearing bones like the tibia, femur and sacrum. Most pathologies preserved in theropod fossils are the remains of injuries, but infections and congenital deformities have also been documented. Pathologies are less frequently documented in small theropods, although this may simply be because the larger bones of correspondingly larger animals would be more likely to fossilize in the first place.

Jianchangosaurus is a genus of therizinosaurian dinosaur that lived approximately 126 million years ago during the early part of the Cretaceous Period from the Yixian Formation in what is now China. The nearly complete juvenile specimen was missing only the distal tail. Jianchangosaurus was a small, lightly built, bipedal, ground-dwelling herbivore, that could grow up to an estimated 2 m (6.6 ft) long and was 1 m (3.3 ft) high at the hips.

Timeline of therizinosaur research

The timeline of therizinosaur research is a chronological listing of events in the history of paleontology focused on therizinosaurs. They were unusually long-necked, pot-bellied, and large-clawed herbivorous theropods most closely related to birds. The early history of therizinosaur research occurred in three phases. The first phase was the discovery of scanty and puzzling fossils in Asia by the Central Asiatic Expeditions of the 1920s and Soviet-backed research in the 1950s. This phase resulted in the discovery of the Therizinosaurus cheloniformis type specimen. Soviet paleontologist Evgeny Maleev interpreted these unusual remains as belonging to some kind of gigantic turtle.

<i>Paralitherizinosaurus</i> Genus of therizinosaurid dinosaurs

Paralitherizinosaurus is an extinct genus of therizinosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Osoushinai Formation of Hokkaido, Japan. The genus contains a single species, P. japonicus, known from a partial right hand and cervical vertebra. Paralitherizinosaurus represents the youngest therizinosaur known from Japan.
