University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. [2] The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. The present Vice Chancellor of the institution is Prof Augustine Angba. [3]

The University took back the indigenous name of the state which was held by the University of Cross River State, Uyo now the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria till 1st October 1991 when the Federal government of Nigeria established the University of Uyo as a Federal University after the separation of the Akwa Ibom Region from Cross River State in 1987. The University of Uyo inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of the then University of Cross River State established by Cross River State in 1983. [4]

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Bursar are all located in the Calabar Campus, considered the main campus of the Institution, which is located in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State in Southern Nigeria. [5] The University was established in 2002 by the then Governor Donald Duke by merging three higher institutions: The Polytechnic of Calabar, The College of Education, and Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture. [6] It offers degree courses at undergraduate and post graduate levels. [7] The university currently has campuses in Calabar, Obubra, Ogoja and Okuku. Ritman University is located in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Ritman University, RU is a privately owned and managed university in Nigeria. Ritman University offers various undergraduate courses/programs. The National University Commission (NUC) granted operational license to Ritman University on March 5, 2015, the university began academic activities on November 23, 2015. Ritman University was founded by Emmanuel Ibok Essien, a former Senator who represented the North West Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State at the 4th Nigerian National Assembly (Senate) between (1999-2003). Bassey Albert Akpan CON is a Nigerian politician who has been a member of the Senate of Nigeria since June 2015. Previously, he was Commissioner of Finance in Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2014. He was first elected to the Senate in March 2015, to represent Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District and he won re-election for a second time in the February 2019 senatorial elections. He is a member of the ypp.ng.

Eno James Ibanga is a Nigerian academic. He is a professor of solid state physics/materials science. He serves as the Vice Chancellor for Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU). On 3 August 2020, His Excellency Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel appointed Professor Eno James Ibanga as commissioner in the state ministry works & Fire service. He is married and blessed with children.

Ivara Ejemot Esu OFR, is a Nigerian politician, academic administrator and professor and is the former Deputy Governor of Cross River State. He hails from Agwagune in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. He holds the Nigerian National Honours Award in the rank of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) conferred on him by President Obasanjo in 2005 and the Cross River State Honours Merit Award conferred on him by Governor Donald Duke in 2004 for carrying out excellent management reforms at the University of Calabar. Esu has held many positions of responsibility such as Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar (2000–2005); Honourable Minister of State for Tourism, Culture and National Orientation ; Member, Technical Committee on Privatization and Commercialization (TCPC), Presidency, Lagos (1990–1992); Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Development Cross River State (1992–1993); Chairman Federal Medical Centre Board, Owerri (2009–2011) and chairman, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi (2012–2015) and was an Elder Statesman Delegate at the 2014 National Conference of Nigeria. Esu is a Soil Scientist (Pedologist) who has taught in various tertiary institutions, some of which include; the Kaduna Polytechnic; Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, University of Calabar, University of Uyo and the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra.

Akon Etim Eyakenyi ; born 24 February 1960) is a Nigerian politician who is the deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State. She served as the senator for Akwa Ibom South from 2019 to 2023. Before being elected to the senate, she was the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development from 2014 to 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan.

Eno E. Ebenso is a Professor of Physical Chemistry who specialise on corrosion inhibition.
