The 1998 Hounslow Council election took place on 7 May 1998 to elect members of Hounslow London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party stayed in overall control of the council. [2]

Contents

The election saw Phil Andrews become the first member of Isleworth Community Group elected to the council after defeating a Labour candidate by two votes. [3] However both the Labour and Conservative parties said they would not work with him due to his past membership of the National Front. [3]

At the same as the election Hounslow saw 74.6% vote in favour of the 1998 Greater London Authority referendum and 25.4% against, on a 31.9% turnout. [4]

Notes

  1. Labour had 50 councillors after winning a by-election in 1995. Just before the election one of their councillors resigned and left a vacancy
  2. Price was a sitting councillor representing the Gunnersbury ward
  3. Leslie Bawn was a sitting councillor representing the Hanworth ward. She was elected in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Cllr. Michael E. Hoban in 1995 [8]
  4. Nathan was a sitting councillor representing the Turnham Green ward
  5. Wharfe was a sitting councillor representing the Isleworth South ward
  6. Singh was a sitting councillor representing the Hounslow West ward
  7. Bartholomew was a sitting councillor representing the Heston West ward
  8. Tindall was elected in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Cllr. Antony Louki in 1997 [8]
  9. Atkinson was a sitting councillor representing the Isleworth North ward
  10. Sterne was a sitting councillor representing the Hounslow South ward
