The 2010 Barnet Council election took place on 6 May 2010 to elect members of Barnet London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election and the Conservative party stayed in overall control of the council. [1]

Contents

Background

Before the election the Conservatives ran the council with 36 seats, compared to 20 for Labour and 6 for the Liberal Democrats, with one seat vacant in Golders Green ward. [2] A total of 251 candidates stood in the election including a full slate of 63 each from the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties. [2] The Green party stood 51 candidates, a record for the party in Barnet, while there were 11 candidates from the new Residents Association of Barnet, 1 from the British National Party and 2 independents. [2]

The Conservative councillors Mike Freer and Matthew Offord stood down at the election, as they were standing in the constituencies of Finchley and Golders Green and Hendon respectively in the general election, which took place at the same as the council election. [2]

Election result

The results saw the Conservatives increase their majority on the council after making a net gain of 2 seats to have 39 councillors. [3] The Conservatives lost 1 seat to Labour in Coppetts ward, but gained 3 seats from the Liberal Democrats. [3] This left Labour on 21 seats, while the Liberal Democrats were reduced to 3 seats in Childs Hill, [4] after losing 2 seats in Mill Hill and 1 seat in High Barnet to the Conservatives. [3] Neither the Green party nor the Residents' Association of Barnet managed to win any seats. [4]

The Green Party achieved its best-ever result in the borough, winning five seats and becoming the official opposition and the largest Green group in London.

On 15 March 2018, following the resignation of a Conservative councillor, the council was in a state of no overall control. The election on 3 May 2018 saw the Conservatives take back overall control with a majority of 13.

The 2022 London local elections took place on 5 May 2022, as part of the 2022 United Kingdom local elections. All London borough councillor seats were up for election. Mayoral elections took place in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham and Tower Hamlets, with Croydon electing a mayor for the first time following a local referendum in October 2021.

All 63 members of Barnet London Borough Council were elected. The Labour Party took overall control, winning 41 of the seats to the Conservative Party's 22. This was the first time Labour had won the council outright; previously, the Conservatives had always won the most seats, usually with an overall majority.
