The 2023 South Hams District Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect all 31 members of South Hams District Council in Devon, England. This was on the same day as other local elections across England. [1] [2] [3] [4] All 20 wards were up for election, each with either one, two or three councillors to be elected. [3] [5]
The council was under Conservative majority control prior to the election, with the leader of the council being Judy Pearce, who had led the council since 2019. She did not stand for re-election. [6] [7]
The election saw the Liberal Democrats win a majority of the seats on the council for the first time in its history. Liberal Democrat group leader Julian Brazil was appointed leader of the council at the subsequent annual council meeting on 25 May 2023. [8] [9]

South Hams is a local government district on the south coast of Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Totnes, although the largest town is Ivybridge. The district also contains the towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe and numerous villages and surrounding rural areas.
Ivybridge is a town and civil parish in the South Hams, in Devon, England. It lies about thirteen miles east of Plymouth. It is at the southern extremity of Dartmoor, a National Park of England and Wales and lies along the A38 "Devon Expressway" road. There are two electoral wards in Ivybridge East and Ivybridge West with a total population of 11,851.
East Devon is a local government district in Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Honiton, although Exmouth is the largest town. The district also contains the towns of Axminster, Budleigh Salterton, Cranbrook, Ottery St Mary, Seaton and Sidmouth, along with numerous villages and surrounding rural areas.

Teignbridge is a local government district in Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Newton Abbot. The district also includes the towns of Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Dawlish, Kingsteignton and Teignmouth, along with numerous villages and surrounding rural areas. Teignbridge contains part of the south Devon coastline, including the Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. Some of the inland western parts of the district lie within the Dartmoor National Park. It is named after the old Teignbridge hundred.
Totnes is a parliamentary constituency in Devon represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since December 2019 by Anthony Mangnall, a Conservative. Mangnall defeated incumbent Sarah Wollaston who had originally been elected as a Conservative but defected to the Liberal Democrats earlier that year.
South West Devon is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1997 by Sir Gary Streeter, a Conservative.
South Hams District Council is the local authority for the South Hams District in Devon, England. The council is elected every four years. Since the last boundary changes in 2015, 31 councillors have been elected from 20 wards: eleven of which elect one councillor, seven elect two councillors and two elect three councillors. Between 1999 and 2014, 40 councillors were elected from 30 wards.
South Hams was a county constituency based on the South Hams district of Devon. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The constituency was created for the 1983 general election, and abolished for the 1997 general election. The constituency covered a vast part of the English Riviera on the south Devon coast.

An election to Devon County Council took place on 2 May 2013 as part of the 2013 United Kingdom local elections. 62 councillors were elected from electoral divisions which returned one county councillor each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The electoral divisions were the same as those used at the previous election in 2009. No elections were held in Plymouth and Torbay, which are unitary authorities outside the area covered by the County Council.

Elections to South Hams District Council took place on 2 May 2019, the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. All 20 wards were up for election, each with either 1, 2 or 3 councillors to be elected. The Conservative Party retained overall control of the council, but with their majority reduced to just 1 seat.
The 2023 United Kingdom local elections were held on Thursday, 4 May 2023 in England and on Thursday 18 May 2023 in Northern Ireland. These included district councils, unitary authorities, and directly elected mayors in England, and included all local councils in Northern Ireland. Notably, these elections were the first to be held under the Elections Act 2022, a new voter identification law that is controversial, meaning voters were required to show photo ID when attending a polling station.
