Brihans Natural Products Ltd. is an Indian ayurvedic skincare and hair care products company headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Founded by Mandar Agashe in 2000, the company has been headed by Sheetal Agashe since 2013.

History

Under Mandar Agashe: 2000 – 2005

In 1998, Mandar Agashe set up Brihans Pharmaceuticals to research ayurvedic medicine. Between August 1999 and February 2000, he test marketedthe company's medicinal and pharmaceutical products across 19 branches across India, formally incorporating the company as Brihans Natural Products on 20 April 2000. [1] [2] In 2001, the company was awarded an Udyog Ratna Award by the New Delhi branch of the Institute of Economic Studies. [3]

In 2002, the company launched an anti-hair loss lotion and a mouth ulcer tablet under the brand names Cleancomb and Oraheal, [4] with its exports reportedly worth Rs 1 crore that same year. [5] The company was reportedly worth Rs. 6 crore by December 2002, and was considering product placement partnerships with beauty salons across India. [6]

By 2003, the company had launched a range of aloe vera, cucumber, and hibiscus gels under the brand names Greenleaf, CucumWhite and JasRed. [7] [8] The same year, Agashe considered expanding the company's exports to the European and American markets, in addition to its export to Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Thailand and South Korea. [5] By 2004, the company was exporting to the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Malaysia and the Maldives. [9]

Under Sheetal Agashe: 2005 – present

In April 2005, Sheetal Agashe joined the company as chief executive officer. [10] By 2006, under her, the company launched aloe vera based health juices under the brand name Brimune. [11] That same year, the company launched a turmeric based face wash and an aloe vera based foot cream under the Greenleaf brand. [12] [13] The company was also noted for the standardisation practices in its manufacturing and its use of Aloe barbadensis in its products. [14]

By 2007, the company sold majority of its skincare and hair care products under the brand Greenleaf, [15] after Agashe decided to consolidate the company's product range under their flagship brand. [16] [17] [18] She was appointed the company's managing director in January 2013. [10]

In April 2014, the company's advertisement of their product Cleancomb was complained against for being misleading, thus violating the Advertising Standard Council of India's Consumer Complaints Council's Code. It was one of 44 health care companies that were complained against at the time. [19] By August 2016, the company shipped its products across India, Réunion, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, [20] and was headquartered in Shaniwar Peth, Pune as of January 2017. [21]

In July 2017, the company sponsored the film Hrudayantar by Vikram Phadnis under their brand Greenleaf. [22] In August 2017, Business Insider reported that the company was a major manufacturer of aloe vera products in India. [23] Another complaint was upheld by the Advertising Standard Council of India against the company's advertisements for their aloe vera gel in December 2017. [24] [25] In November 2018, a report published by a San Francisco based market research firm, included the company as a major contributor to the Indian aloe vera industry. [26]

In April 2019, Agashe was the recipient of a Pune Visionary Award from the The Times of India for her work as the managing director of the company. [27] In December 2019, the company's brand Greenleaf was the recipient of The Economic Times' Promising Brand Award, [28] and sponsored the 6th Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards in Mumbai that same month. Aloin

Aloin, also known as barbaloin, is a bitter, yellow-brown colored compound noted in the exudate of at least 68 Aloe species at levels from 0.1 to 6.6% of leaf dry weight, and in another 17 species at indeterminate levels [Reynolds, 1995b]. It is used as a stimulant-laxative, treating constipation by inducing bowel movements. The compound is present in what is commonly referred to as the aloe latex that exudes from cells adjacent to the vascular bundles, found under the rind of the leaf and in between it and the gel. When dried, it has been used as a bittering agent in commerce [21 CFR 172.510. Scientific names given include Aloe perryi, A. barbadensis, A. ferox, and hybrids of A. ferox with A. africana and A. spicata.]. Aloe is listed in federal regulations as a natural substance that may be "safely used in food" when used "in the minimum quantity required to produce their intended physical or technical effect and in accordance with all the principles of good manufacturing practice." This food application is generally limited to use in quite small quantities as a flavoring in alcoholic beverages and may usually be identified only as a "natural flavor."
