Cantons of Ecuador

The cantons of Ecuador are the second-level subdivisions of Ecuador, below the provinces. The cantons are further subdivided into parishes, which are classified as either urban or rural.

Contents

As of 2025, there are 222 cantons in the country. The most recently created cantons are Sevilla Don Bosco in Morona Santiago Province in 2024; [1] [2] and La Concordia in Esmeraldas Province in 2007, although in 2013 La Concordia was transferred to Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province. [3] [4]

In each canton there is a jefe político, chosen by, and representing the interests of, the president. There is also a mayor (alcalde) and a municipal council (concejo municipal), chosen by popular vote.

Miss Ecuador is a national beauty pageant in Ecuador. The current Miss Ecuador is Eunice Rivadeneira from Guayas. She won the title on 17 August 2024, and will represent Ecuador at Miss International 2025.

The first beauty queen in Ecuador was Sara Chacón Zúñiga from Guayaquil, Guayas province in 1930. She wore the sash and the crown of Miss Ecuador for the very first time. The contest was inactive for more than 20 years until 1955 when Leonor Carcache won the first modern title of Miss Ecuador and became the first representative of the country to the Miss Universe pageant.

Canal Uno was an Ecuadorian television network owned by the Group Rivas operated RELAD S.A., in the city of Guayaquil and Canal Uno S.A., in the city of Quito. Since its start in broadcasting on November 6, 1992, as CRE Televisión, April 18, 1994, as SíTV and May 6, 2002, the channel has become one of the largest chains of Ecuador.

Gabriela Alejandra Rivadeneira Burbano is an Ecuadorian politician. She was President of the National Assembly of Ecuador between May 2013 and May 2017. Previously she was Governor of Imbabura Province from 2011 to 2012.

Miss Ecuador 2016, the 66th Miss Ecuador pageant, was held on March 12, 2016 in Machala, El Oro. Francesca Cipriani, Miss Ecuador 2015 from Guayas crowned her successor Connie Jiménez of Los Ríos at the end of the event. The winner represented Ecuador at Miss Universe 2016 and went on to be the governor of her province.

Miss World Ecuador 2016 was the fourth Miss World Ecuador pageant, held at the Calle 7 Set in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on October 15, 2016.

Matilde Esther was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Los Ríos, Guayas and Bolívar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.

El Piedrero was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Guayas and Cañar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.

The Citizen Revolution Movement is a democratic socialist political party in Ecuador formed by supporters of former President Rafael Correa who distanced themselves from Correa's former PAIS Alliance party during the presidency of Lenín Moreno. The party takes its name from the term used to refer to the project of building a new society.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Ecuadorian protests</span> 2022 protests in Ecuador

A series of protests against the economic policies of Ecuadorian president Guillermo Lasso, triggered by increasing fuel and food prices, began on 13 June 2022. Initiated by and primarily attended by Indigenous activists, in particular the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), the protests have since been joined by students and workers who have also been affected by the price increases. Lasso condemned the protests and labelled them as an attempted "coup d'état" against his government.

Sevilla Don Bosco is a canton in the Ecuadorian province of Morona Santiago. It is located about 240 kilometres (150 mi) south of Quito, the national capital. Established in 2024, it is Ecuador's newest canton.
