The Cantons of Ecuador are the second-level subdivisions of Ecuador, below the provinces. There are 221 cantons in the country, [1] of which three are not in any province[ clarification needed ]. The cantons are further sub-divided into parishes, which are classified as either urban or rural. Below is a list of cantons by province.

In each canton there is a jefe político, chosen by, and representing the interests of, the president. There is also a mayor (alcalde) and a municipal council (concejo municipal), chosen by popular vote.
Guayas is a coastal province in Ecuador. It is bordered to the west by Manabí, Santa Elena, and the Pacific Ocean ; to the east by Los Ríos, Bolívar, Chimborazo, Cañar, and Azuay; to the north by Los Ríos and Bolívar; and to the south by El Oro and the Pacific Ocean.
Ecuador is divided into 24 provinces. The provinces of Ecuador and their capitals are:
Manabí is a province in Ecuador. Its capital is Portoviejo. The province is named after the Manabí people.
The Guayas River also called Rio Guayas is a major river in western Ecuador. It gives name to Guayas Province and is the most important river in South America that does not flow into the Atlantic Ocean or any of its marginal seas. Its total length, including the Daule River, is 389 km. The Guayas River's drainage basin is 34,500 sq.km and it has an average discharge of 70,000 cu ft/s. It is the national river of Ecuador and is present on the Coat of Arms.
Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is a province in the Republic of Ecuador, created in October 2007 from territory previously in the province of Pichincha.
Chone is a town in the province of Manabí in Ecuador. Officially, La Real Santisíma Villa Rica de la Bendita Providencia de San Cayetano de Chone de esta nuestra Nueva Castilla in reference to Saint Cajetan and The City of Kings, called Pueblo Viejo de Chone or Señorío de Pechance was founded in the early days of the colonization. It is in Ecuador's low-lying coastal region and plays an important CHONE transportation hub. It is about seven hours by bus from the capital city of Quito.
The Republic of Gran Colombia was a former independent country in northern South America, a post-Spanish colonial country that existed from 1819 to 1831. Its initial subdivisions, created in 1820, were revised and expanded in 1824.
The first beauty queen in Ecuador was Sara Chacón Zúñiga from Guayaquil, Guayas province in 1930. She wore the sash and the crown of Miss Ecuador for the very first time. The contest was inactive for more than 20 years until 1955 when Leonor Carcache won the first modern title of Miss Ecuador and became the first representative of the country to the Miss Universe pageant.
Luis Ramón Félix López was an Ecuadorian doctor, politician and renowned writer who held many senior public positions in his country during his lifetime.
Canal Uno is an Ecuadorian television network owned by the Group Rivas operated RELAD S.A., in the city of Guayaquil and Canal Uno S.A., in the city of Quito. Since its start in broadcasting on November 6, 1992 as CRE Televisión, April 18, 1994 as SíTV and May 6, 2002, the channel has become one of the largest chains of Ecuador.
Miss Ecuador 2015, the 65th Miss Ecuador pageant, was held on March 14, 2015. Alejandra Argudo, Miss Ecuador 2014 from Manabí crowned successor Francesca Cipriani from Guayas as Miss Ecuador 2015. The winner represented Ecuador at Miss Universe 2015, the 1st Runner-up competed at Miss International 2015, and the 2nd Runner participated at Miss Supranational 2015.
Miss Ecuador 2016, the 66th Miss Ecuador pageant, was held on March 12, 2016 in Machala, El Oro. Francesca Cipriani, Miss Ecuador 2015 from Guayas crowned her successor Connie Jiménez of Los Ríos at the end of the event. The winner represented Ecuador at Miss Universe 2016.
A seven-part referendum and popular consultation was held in Ecuador on Sunday, February 4, 2018, to reform the constitution and consult citizens on issues of national importance. The consultation was announced on October 2, 2017, by President Lenin Moreno. The ballot consisted of seven questions for voters to approve or reject.
The referendum of La Manga del Cura status was held in La Manga del Cura zone on 27 September 2015 to decide to which Ecuadorian province it would belong.
La Manga del Cura is a territory located in the Manabí Province belonging to the canton El Carmen in Ecuador.
Miss Ecuador 2018, the 68th edition of the Miss Ecuador pageant. The Gala Finale was held on 5th May 2018. The winner will represent Ecuador in Miss Universe 2018 pageant.
Las Golondrinas is a territory of Ecuador.
Matilde Esther was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Los Ríos, Guayas and Bolívar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.
El Piedrero was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Guayas and Cañar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.
Miss Ecuador 2020 was the 70th edition of the Miss Ecuador pageant. The contest was held on 17 October, 2020 at Hotel Wyndham Sail in Manta, Manabí Province. Cristina Hidalgo from Guayas Province crowned Leyla Espinoza from Los Ríos Province as her successor at the end of the event. The winner will compete at Miss Universe 2020.
