Cantons of Ecuador

The Cantons of Ecuador are the second-level subdivisions of Ecuador, below the provinces. There are 221 cantons in the country, [1] of which three are not in any province[ clarification needed ]. The cantons are further sub-divided into parishes, which are classified as either urban or rural. Below is a list of cantons by province.

In each canton there is a jefe político, chosen by, and representing the interests of, the president. There is also a mayor (alcalde) and a municipal council (concejo municipal), chosen by popular vote.

Imbabura is a province located in the Andes of northern Ecuador. The capital is Ibarra. The people of the province speak Spanish, and a large portion of the population also speaks the Imbaburan Kichwa variety of the Quechua language.

Manabí is a province in the Republic of Ecuador. Its capital is Portoviejo. The province is named after the Manabí people.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Guayas River</span> River in Ecuador

The Guayas River also called Rio Guayas is a major river in western Ecuador. It gives name to Guayas Province and is the most important river in South America that does not flow into the Atlantic Ocean or any of its marginal seas. Its total length, including the Daule River, is 389 km (241 mi). The Guayas River's drainage basin is 34,500 km2 and it has an average discharge of 70,000 cu ft/s. It is the national river of Ecuador and is present on the coat of arms of Ecuador.

The Republic of Gran Colombia was a former independent country in northern South America, a post-Spanish colonial country that existed from 1819 to 1831. Its initial subdivisions, created in 1820, were revised and expanded in 1824 to 12 departments.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ecuador at beauty pageants</span>

The first beauty queen in Ecuador was Sara Chacón Zúñiga from Guayaquil, Guayas province in 1930. She wore the sash and the crown of Miss Ecuador for the very first time. The contest was inactive for more than 20 years until 1955 when Leonor Carcache won the first modern title of Miss Ecuador and became the first representative of the country to the Miss Universe pageant.

Luis Ramón Félix López was an Ecuadorian doctor, politician and renowned writer who held many senior public positions in his country during his lifetime.

A seven-part referendum and popular consultation was held in Ecuador on Sunday, February 4, 2018, to reform the constitution and consult citizens on issues of national importance. The consultation was announced on October 2, 2017, by President Lenin Moreno. The ballot consisted of seven questions for voters to approve or reject.

The referendum of La Manga del Cura status was held in La Manga del Cura zone on 27 September 2015 to decide to which Ecuadorian province it would belong.

La Manga del Cura is a territory located in the Manabí Province belonging to the canton El Carmen in Ecuador.

Miss Ecuador 2018, the 68th edition of the Miss Ecuador pageant. The gala finale was held on 5 May 2018, in Machala, El Oro. Daniela Cepeda from Guayas crowned Virginia Limongi from Manabí as Miss Ecuador 2018. The winner competed at Miss Universe 2018.

Las Golondrinas is a territory of Ecuador.

Matilde Esther was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Los Ríos, Guayas and Bolívar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.

El Piedrero was a non-delimited territory of Ecuador situated between the provinces of Guayas and Cañar. It was incorporated into the Guayas Province by the decree issued by President Rafael Correa in 2017.

Miss Ecuador 2020 was the 70th edition of the Miss Ecuador pageant. The contest was held on 17 October, 2020 at Hotel Wyndham Sail in Manta, Manabí Province. Cristina Hidalgo from Guayas Province crowned Leyla Espinoza from Los Ríos Province as her successor at the end of the event. The winner would compete at Miss Universe 2020.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 Ecuadorian general election</span>

General elections were held in Ecuador on 7 February 2021, established by the National Electoral Council (CNE) as the date for the first round of the presidential election and a vote on mining in Cuenca. Incumbent president Lenín Moreno, who had held the office since his victory over Guillermo Lasso in 2017, did not seek reelection. Although delaying the election due to the COVID-19 pandemic was discussed, the CNE announced on 15 December 2020 that the electoral calendar would not shift and confirmed elections would take place in February 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Free Province of Guayaquil</span>

The Free Province of Guayaquil was a South American state that emerged between 1820 and 1822 with the independence of the province of Guayaquil from the Spanish monarchy. The free province had a provisional government and constitution until its annexation by Gran Colombia in 1822. Its successor was the Department of Guayaquil forming part of Gran Colombia.
The Spanish province of Guayaquil had been separated from the Viceroyalty of Peru and in those days it only depended legally on the court of the Real Audiencia de Quito. About a decade later, the Departments of Guayaquil, Azuay, and Ecuador separated from Gran Colombia forming the current Ecuador.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Ecuadorian constitutional referendum</span>

A constitutional referendum was held in Ecuador on 5 February 2023, alongside local elections. The binding consultation was called on 29 November 2022 by President Guillermo Lasso. Voters were asked to approve or reject a total of eight questions surrounding changes to the Constitution of Ecuador. Soon after the referendum, Reuters, Al Jazeera, CNN en Español and the Financial Times projected the failure of all eight of its proposals, with president Guillermo Lasso eventually conceding defeat. Turnout for the referendum was estimated at 80.74%.

On 4 February 2023, Omar Menéndez, a 41-year-old Ecuadorian man who was running as the Citizen Revolution Movement party's candidate for mayor in the canton of Puerto López, Manabí Province in the 2023 Ecuadorian local elections, was shot and killed by two unidentified men just a few hours before the ballots were officially opened. Three other people were injured in the same shooting, including a 16-year-old volunteer, who eventually died from complications after being taken to the hospital.
