In January 2015, the former five male divisions and one female division were consolidated into four regions, as listed below. [2] As of February 2015, North Carolina houses about 38,000 offenders in 56 correctional institutions. [3]

Renamed Prisons

In 2021, five facilities were renamed because their previous names were explicitly associated with racism or slavery. The Roanoke River Correctional Institution was previously the Caledonia Correctional Institution, also known as the Caledonia State Prison Farm. The Western Correctional Center for Women was previously the Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women. The Granville Correctional Institution was previously the Polk Correctional Institution. The Richmond Correctional Institution was previously the Morrison Correction Institution. The DART Center in Goldsboro was previously the DART Cherry Facility. [5]

Until its closure, the prison housed the state's male convicts serving long sentences for violent crimes; previously, it had also housed the death row for inmates before the abolition of the death penalty in Connecticut.

The Oregon Department of Corrections is the agency of the U.S. state of Oregon charged with managing a system of 12 state prisons since its creation by the state legislature in 1987. In addition to having custody of offenders sentenced to prison for more than 12 months, the agency provides program evaluation, oversight and funding for the community corrections activities of county governments. It is also responsible for interstate compact administration, jail inspections, and central information and data services regarding felons throughout the state. It has its headquarters in Salem.

The Roanoke River Correctional Institution is a minimum/medium security prison in North Carolina, United States. The oldest state prison in North Carolina, it has operated from 1892 to the present. It is located in Halifax County, on approximately 7,500 acres that was purchased by the state in 1899. It was previously named the Caledonia State Prison Farm and the Caledonia Correctional Institution.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lowell Correctional Institution</span> Prison in Florida, United States

Lowell Correctional Institution is a women's prison in unincorporated Marion County, Florida, north of Ocala, in the unincorporated area of Lowell. A part of the Florida Department of Corrections, it serves as the primary prison for women in the state. Almost 3,000 women are incarcerated in the complex, which includes the Lowell Annex. As of 2015 2,696 women are in the main Lowell CI, making it the largest prison for women in the United States; its prison population became larger than that of the Central California Women's Facility that year.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) is an umbrella agency that carries out many of the state's law enforcement, emergency response and homeland security functions. The department was created in 1977 as the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. In 2012, the North Carolina Department of Correction and the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention were merged with Crime Control & Public Safety to create the new agency.

North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) is the primary North Carolina Department of Public Safety prison facility housing female inmates on a 30-acre (12 ha) campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, and serves as a support facility for the six other women's prisons throughout the state. The facility's inmate population, which is the largest in the state, consists of inmates from all custody levels and control statuses including death row, maximum security, close custody, medium security, minimum security, and safekeepers.

Alexander Correctional Institution (AXCI) is a North Carolina Department of Public Safety state prison for men, located in Taylorsville, North Carolina. The facility opened in 2004 as one of three 1000-bed Close Custody prisons built in the state.

The Tabor Correctional Institution, also known as Tabor City Prison, is a prison within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety located in Tabor City, North Carolina. It houses over 1700 mixed classification inmates. The prison opened in 2008. The prison is located at 4600 West Swamp Fox Highway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Carolina Penitentiary</span> Building in Columbia, South Carolina

The South Carolina Penitentiary (SCP) (renamed the Central Correctional Institution (CCI) in 1965) was the state of South Carolina's first prison. Completed in 1867, the South Carolina Penitentiary served as the primary state prison for nearly 130 years until its demolition in 1999. It was located adjacent to the Congaree River in Columbia, South Carolina and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1996. It was replaced by the Lee Correctional Institution as the main prison in the state of South Carolina after the prison was deemed too overcrowded by a federal court.

Fountain Correctional Center for Women was a women's prison in unincorporated Edgecombe County, North Carolina, near Rocky Mount. It was operated by the North Carolina Department of Correction and later the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Scotland Correctional Institution is a state men's prison in Laurinburg, North Carolina, first opened in 2003 and operated by the North Carolina Department of Correction. The stated capacity is 1,756 prisoners.

Brown Creek Correctional Institution is a state men's prison in Polkton, North Carolina, first opened in July 1993 and operated by the North Carolina Department of Correction.

Tillery is an unincorporated community in Halifax County, North Carolina, that was a plantation and is now home to a museum. Tillery was incorporated as a town in 1889. Franklin Roosevelt's Resettlement Administration instituted a New Deal era resettlement program in the area. In 1936 it was renamed Roanoke Farms. The ZIP Code for Tillery is 27887.
