Maroochy River is a rural hinterland locality in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. [2] In the 2016 census Maroochy River had a population of 1,531 people. [1]

Geography

The Maroochy River meanders from west to east through the locality. The surrounding river flats are cleared and primarily used for farming. The hillsides in the north-west and south-east of the locality are primarily used for residential purposes and retain natural bushland. Coolum Creek forms the eastern boundary of the locality. [3]

History

The name Maroochy is either a Yugarabul name collected by Andrew Petrie when he explored Wide Bay in 1842 or from Kabi word muru-kutchi meaning red bill referring to the black swan. [2]

Maroochy River State School opened on 27 June 1911. It closed on 31 December 1972. [4] The school was at 4 Lake Dunethin Road ( 26°34′43″S153°00′39″E / 26.5785°S 153.0109°E / -26.5785; 153.0109 (Maroochy River State School (former)) ). [5] [6] The site is now occupied by the Dunethin Rock Scout campground. [7]

In the 2011 census Maroochy River had a population of 1,337 people. [8]

In the 2016 census Maroochy River had a population of 1,531 people. [1]

Cooloolabin Dam is a concrete gravity dam on Rocky Creek located to the west of Yandina in the headwaters of the South Maroochy River waterway. The main dam wall is 19-metre (62 ft) high and 243 m (797 ft) long, the five saddle dams total 1,100 m (3,600 ft) in length. The dam was completed in 1979 with a capacity of 13,600 ML (11,000 acre⋅ft) and overflowed for the first time in 1988. As part of the seqwater Dam Improvement Program, a section of the spillway was cut away in 2015 to lower the spillway by 3 metres (9.8 ft), reducing the full supply capacity to 8,183 ML (6,634 acre⋅ft).
