Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha International Airport [1] ( IATA : HWR, ICAO : VIHX) also known as Halwara International Airport or Ludhiana International Airport is an international airport being built at the town of Halwara in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. [2] [3]
Once completed, it will be the third international airport in Punjab after Amritsar and Chandigarh. [4] The site is 32-km drive from Ludhiana City and the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) has acquired 161.27 acres of land [5] in Halwara for the building of a Ludhiana international civil terminal. The airport is being built to accommodate Boeing 737-700 and Airbus A-320 aircraft. The upcoming airport is likely to accelerate the growth of businesses in Ludhiana. [6] Air India is set to start flights to the airport, once it has been handed over to AAI. [7]
The airport is currently under construction. [6] The airport was planned to be operational by 31 March 2022 but the project had been stalled from May after GLADA failed to release funds for its construction. The construction for the airport was again started on 21 November 2022, after Punjab Government released funds through GLADA and Finance department. [8]
