Sundar Nagar (also spelled as Sundernagar) is a town and a municipal council in Mandi district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It was formerly a princely state, known as Suket. [2]

Sundar Nagar is located in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India. Its geographical coordinates are 31° 32' 0" North, 76° 53' 0" East and its original name (with diacritics) is Sundar Nagar. The city has an average elevation of 900 metres (3,000 ft). [2]

Demography

According to 2011 Census of India, the town's population stood at 24,344. [1] Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sundar Nagar has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 85%, and Female literacy is 78%. In Sundar Nagar, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Airport

The nearest airport is Bhuntar, near Kullu, which is about 82 km from the town.

A greenfield "Sundar Nagar International Airport", in Balh Valley, has been in planning since long. In 2013, the Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP) had sent a proposal to the Government of India (GoI) to construct this airport, which was estimated to cost Rs 700 crore at 2013 prices. The proposed airport will have facilities for the wide-bodied larger aircraft. The techno-economic feasibility study of the identified site were already completed. The site, near Sunder Nagar, lies nearly in the center of the state. The state has three existing small airports at Kangra (146 km (91 mi) northwest), Kullu (79 km (49 mi) north) and Shimla (125 km (78 mi) southeast). [5] A satellite survey of the site was conducted in 2018 and 698 acres land in the Ner Chowk area in Balh Valley was identified. [6] In 2019, GoI had granted the approval for the airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI) was preparing a "detailed project report" (DPR) and GoHP was speeding up the land acquisition process. [7]

Rail and roads

The nearest broad-gauge railway station is Kiratpur Sahib which is about 105 km. Another broad-gauge railhead is at Pathankot, a distance of 210 km. From Pathankot, the narrow gauge railway connects to Joginder Nagar which is 80-km from Sundar Nagar.

Roads

Sundar Nagar is situated on NH-154 (previously named NH21), 22 km from Mandi, and is well-connected by road to other places. Frequent bus services are available from Chandigarh, Delhi, Shimla, and Jammu for Sundar Nagar. The main bus stand is just above an open playing field, where the National Highway 21 continues along the left bank of river to Pandoh.

Himachal Pradesh, although railways and airways serve very limited transport needs, the road network of the state serves the transport needs of the people. Barot, a village originally developed in the 1920s for Shanan Hydel Project, is now a tourist location in Mandi district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Barot was difficult to access until 1975, when a road was opened. It is situated 40 km from Jogindernagar and 65 km from Mandi, the district headquarter. The road to Barot branches off at Jogindernagar-Mandi Highway and from Jogindernagar the distance is 40 km. It is sometimes possible to use the funicular trolley from Jogindernagar which reduces the distance to 12 km. The road route includes terraced fields and thick cedar forests, rising to Jhatingri at the hilltop. The remains of the summer palace of the former rulers of Mandi are located here. Through the small village of Tikkan, the road carries on to Barot. The town has a range of outdoor activities, including a trout breeding centre, from where fish are released into the Uhl river. A 30 km section of the river is used for angling.

Mandi Airport is a proposed greenfield airport to be built at Nag Chala in Mandi District in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The airport will be built on a total of 698 acres. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) gave its clearance for the airport after visiting the site in May 2018. In August 2019, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur requested the Fifteenth Finance Commission for a special purpose grant of Rs 2,000 crore towards construction of the airport for operation of wide-body aircraft. The AAI completed its Obstacle Limitation Surfaces survey for the project site in August 2019. The Ministry of Civil Aviation gave in-principle approval for the execution of the project with the help of the AAI in October 2019. In January 2020, AAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Himachal Pradesh Government to build and operate the airport through a Joint Venture Company. The airport will have a unidirectional runway, suitable for operation of aircraft up to ATR 72 initially. WAPCOS has been appointed as project consultant and has floated tenders for environmental impact assessment for the project following a site visit in July 2020.
