Kyan is a former settlement in Kern County, California. [1] It was located on the Sunset Railroad 11.5 miles (19 km) east of Taft, [2] at an elevation of 335 feet (102 m). [1] Kyan still appeared on maps as of 1932. [1]

Taft is a city in the foothills at the extreme southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m). The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 square miles (39.1 km2).

John Howard Kyan was the inventor of the 'kyanising' process for preserving wood. He was the son of John Howard Kyan of Mount Howard and Ballymurtagh, County Wexford, and was born in Dublin on 27 November 1774. His father was the owner of valuable copper mines in Wicklow and, for some time worked them himself. The son was educated to take part in the management of the mines, but soon after he entered the company its fortunes declined, and in 1804 his father died almost penniless.
