List of states and union territories of India by voters

This is a list of states and union territories of India by the number of voters polled in the fifteen Lok Sabha elections between 1951 and 2009, based on data released by the Election Commission of India. In the 2009 general election, the Indian electorate was estimated to total approximately 714 million individuals, out of whom around 415 million cast a vote. [1] [2]

Pondicherry became a union territory after the implementation of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution of India in 1962 and changed its name to Puducherry in 2006. This constituency first held elections in 1967 and its first member of parliament (MP) was Thirumudi N. Sethuraman of the Indian National Congress (INC).

General elections were held in India in five phases between 16 April 2009 and 13 May 2009 to elect the members of the 15th Lok Sabha. With an electorate of 716 million, it was the largest democratic election in the world until being surpassed by the 2014 general election.

General elections were held in India between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952. They were the first elections to the Lok Sabha after independence in August 1947. It was conducted under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, which was adopted on 26 November 1949. Elections to most of the state legislatures took place simultaneously.

General elections were held in India in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014 to elect the members of the 16th Lok Sabha. With 834 million registered voters, they were the largest-ever elections in the world until being surpassed by the 2019 elections. Around 23.1 million or 2.7% of the total eligible voters were aged 18–19 years. A total of 8,251 candidates contested the 543 elected Lok Sabha seats. The average election turnout over all nine phases was around 66.40%, the highest ever in the history of Indian general elections.

Amethi Lok Sabha constituency is in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It covers the entire Amethi district and was created in 1967. The seat is considered to be one of the bastion of Indian National Congress (INC). Rahul Gandhi held the seat for the longest period, from 2004 to 2019 but lost to Smriti Irani and BJP seized the prestigious seat from the scion of Congress. The seat had also been held by his mother, father, and uncle.

Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 543 parliamentary constituencies in India. The constituency centres on Arambagh in West Bengal. While six assembly segments of Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency are in Hooghly district, one segment is in Paschim Medinipur district. The seat was earlier an open seat but from 2009 it was reserved for scheduled castes. Dongal is the most developing area of Arambagh. Dongal is the business hub of Arambagh.

Panskura Lok Sabha constituency was one of the 543 parliamentary constituencies in India. The constituency centred on Panskura in West Bengal.

Amar Nath Yadav, alternatively Amarnath Yadav is an Indian politician and former member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He is a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation and a member of the Bihar State Committee of the party. He is also the vice president of the Kisan Mahasabha in Bihar. He is known for his opposition to the erstwhile rule of local strongman Mohammad Shahabuddin and described by a Hindustan Times article as "the only man who stood up to Shahabuddin". He had represented the Darauli constituency from 1995–2000 and from 2005–2010. He rose to prominence in the area after the murder of the student leader Chandrashekhar Prasad in 1997, who died whilst campaigning against Shahabuddin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Indian general election</span>

General elections were held in India in seven phases from 11 April to 19 May 2019 to elect the members of the 17th Lok Sabha. Votes were counted and the result was declared on 23 May. Around 912 million people were eligible to vote, and voter turnout was over 67 percent – the highest ever, as well as the highest ever participation by women voters.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Election Commission of India</span> Election regulatory body of India

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body. It was established by the Constitution of India to conduct and regulate elections in the country. Article 324 of the Constitution provides that the power of superintendence, direction, and control of elections to parliament, state legislatures, the office of the president of India, and the office of vice-president of India shall be vested in the election commission. Thus, the Election Commission is an all-India body in the sense that it is common to both the Central government and the state governments.
