Nagpur Junction (station code: NGP) is a railway station in Nagpur, in the Indian state of Maharashtra.It situated at the junction of Howrah-Mumbai and New Delhi–Chennai main lines.

History

Nagpur railway station is one of the oldest and busiest stations in Maharashtra, India. In 1867, Mumbai rail first connected to Nagpur. In 1881, Nagpur was connected to Kolkata via the Nagpur State Railway of Chhattisgarh. [3] [4] It was officially inaugurated on 15 January 1925 by then Governor Sir Frank Sly. [4] Prior to 1924, the Nagpur Railway Junction Station was located east of its current location. Nagpur Junction Railway Station became a major tourist destination. [5]

Services

Nagpur railway station receives two hundred and twenty-eight trains, with approximately 160,000 passengers embarking and disembarking daily. [2]

Direct trains run from Nagpur railway station to all major cities, including: Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Development

In 2008, Nagpur railway station was among 22 stations in India that were recommended to be upgraded to meet international standards. Priority areas were identified: security, safety and cleanliness. Work was to be undertaken via Public-Private Partnerships and the Central Railway. [6] but it will be clean very soon and compete with other station "Survey of new rail line Chhindwara-Kareli-Sagour Rail line is in progress. This will help in connecting Villages of Chhindwara, Narsinghpur And Sagar Districts and Help in the Development of Satpura, Mahakaushal and Bundelkhand Area respectively as a whole. This will provide and alternative North South Route Via Lalitpur-Sagar-Narsinghpur-Chhindwara-Nagpur route alternative to Bina-Bhopal-Itarsi-Amla-Betul-Nagpur route thereby decreasing the distance between North South by nearly 300 km. Kareli Railway Station will serve as an alternative to Itarsi Junction. This railway line will help in connecting Itarsi-Narsinghpur-Jabalpur-katni stretch and Itarsi - Bhopal-Bina-Saugor-Katni stretch of West Central Railways. Recently CCEA also Sanctioned Gadarwara-Indore new rail line via Budni. These two rail lines in combination will reduce the distance of State's Financial Capital Indore from District like Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Hoshangabad, Sagar, Chhindwara which will help in industrial and economic development of these regions"

Before the construction of the Bina-Katni branch of the Indian Midland Railway, the metaled road from Saugor crossing the Nerbudda at Barmhan brought the bulk of the produce of the Sagar District to Kareli station. A mail cart ran from Kareli to Sagar, a distance of 122 km (76 mi). The trade of Kareli has now considerably declined, but it is still the exporting station for the southern parts of the Rehli tahsil of Sagar and the north of Narsinghpur. A cotton-ginning factory, the property of Raja Gokul Das, was opened in 1904. This is the nearest rail station and market for towns of Sagar district.

Itarsi Junction railway station

Itarsi Junction is a railway station in Hoshangabad District in Madhya Pradesh from which more than 385 trains pass every day. It is the 8th busiest railway junction in India. It falls under the West Central Railway zone of Indian Railways network. It is located 18 kilometres (11 mi) away from Hoshangabad by train, and by road it is 20 kilometers. Trains from Central Railway undergo engine changes here i.e. electric engines of WAP/WAM/WAG class are changed to diesel engines of WDP/WDM/WDG class and vice versa. These changes happen for trains which pass through Jabalpur-Katni-Satna railway line and sometimes for trains which pass through Bhopal. In 2015 the signal control system was gutted in a fire incident resulting in hundreds of trains being cancelled for over 30 days till normality was restored.
