SS Arratoon Apcar was an iron-hulled sail and steam merchant ship that was built in Scotland in 1861 and wrecked off the coast of Florida in 1878. Her wreck in shallow water on Fowey Rocks is now a scuba diving site.
James Henderson & Son built the ship at Renfrew, Scotland, as yard number 36. She was launched on 27 June 1861 and completed that year. [1] Her registered length was 261.7 ft (79.8 m), her beam was 35.1 ft (10.7 m), and her depth was 25.0 ft (7.6 m). Her tonnages were 1,493 GRT and 959 NRT. [2] [3]
She was a sail-steamer. She had three masts, and a steam engine that was rated at 250 NHP. [2]
Her first owner was Apcar and Company of Bombay, India. [2] [3] She was named after the member of the Apcar family who founded the company. She was registered at Calcutta. Her UK official number was 43924 and her code letters were TRBG. [2] [3]
In 1873 Henry Frederick Swan acquired the ship and registered her in London. Black, Hawthorn & Co of Gateshead re-engined her with a two-cylinder compound engine rated at 160 NHP. [4] [5] By 1873 she was rigged as a barquentine. Apcar & Co replaced her with a larger ship of the same name. [6]
In February 1878 Arratoon Apcar was en route from Liverpool, England to Havana, Cuba with a cargo of coal. [1] On 17 February 1878 she grounded on Fowey Rocks off of Hawk Channel, due to a miscalculation by her Master, Captain Pottinger. [7]
Other ships had already been wrecked on the reef. [7] The Fowey Rocks Light was being built at the time, and construction workers were camped on a platform on the new screw pilings for the lighthouse. They were almost hit by the ship, which stopped on the rocks only 200 yards (180 m) away. [8]
The ship's crew spent three days trying to pump her out before abandoning her and heading ashore in her lifeboats. The Tappahannock rescued Captain Pottinger and his entire crew of 24 men. [7] Heavy seas pushed the ship onto the reef, breaking her on the rocks. [9] She was a total loss by 12 March 1878. [7]
The wreck now tentatively identified as the Arratoon Apcar was known for many years as Arakanapka, [10] and is so called in books [11] and on various dive-related web sites. [12]
The wreck is at a depth of 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 m) near Fowey Rocks. The lower hull and iron frames of the ship are visible, encrusted with coral, along with remains of some other parts of the ship. There are many fish, and with shallow water the site is excellent for snorkelling or diving. However, the shallow waters near the reef may create strong surges that could damage a boat. [7] Arratoon Apcar is one of five historic wrecks in the Biscayne National Park "Shipwreck Trail". [9]
SS Yongala was a passenger steamship that was built in England in 1903 for the Adelaide Steamship Company. She sank in a cyclone off the coast of Queensland in 1911, with the loss of all 122 passengers and crew aboard.
Jun'yō Maru (順陽丸) was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1913, served a succession of British owners until 1927, and was then in Japanese ownership until a Royal Navy submarine sank her in 1944.
SS Newfoundland was a wooden-hulled brigantine and steamship that was built in 1872 and wrecked in 1916. She was a cargo ship, and for part of her career she was a sealing ship. In 1916 she was renamed Samuel Blandford.
Loch Ard was an iron-hulled clipper ship that was built in Scotland in 1873 and wrecked on the Shipwreck Coast of Victoria, Australia in 1878.
Fowey Rocks Light is located seven miles southeast of Cape Florida on Key Biscayne. The lighthouse was completed in 1878, replacing the Cape Florida Light. It was automated on May 7, 1975, and as of 2021 is still in operation. The structure is cast iron, with a screw-pile foundation, a platform and a skeletal tower. The light is 110 feet above the water. The tower framework is painted brown, while the dwelling and enclosed circular stair to the lantern is painted white. The original lens was a first-order drum Fresnel lens which stood about 12 feet (4 m) high and weighed about a ton (tonne). The light has a nominal range of 15 miles in the white sectors, and 10 miles in the red sectors. It serves as a maker for the entrance to the Hawk Channel passage through the Florida Keys.
SS Copenhagen is a shipwreck off the town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, United States. She was a cargo steamship, built in England in 1898. She was wrecked on a reef south of Hillsboro Inlet in 1900.
SS Castilian was a British cargo steamship and is now a dangerous wreck in the Irish Sea off the coast of North Wales. She was built in 1919 to a standard First World War design. In 1943 while carrying munitions she struck rocks off The Skerries, Isle of Anglesey and sank.
HMS Fowey was a fifth rate warship of the Royal Navy, launched on 14 August 1744 in Hull, England. She spent only four years in commission before she struck a reef and sank in what is known today as Legare Anchorage in Biscayne National Park, off the coast of Florida. She was armed with six, nine, and eighteen pounder guns and crewed with over 200 men.
SS Gothenburg was an iron-hulled sail- and steamship that was built in England in 1854 and sailed between England and Sweden until 1862. She then moved to Australia, where she operated across the Tasman Sea to and from New Zealand until 1873, when she was rebuilt. After her rebuild, she operated in the Australian coastal trade.
Loch Vennachar was an iron-hulled, three-masted clipper ship that was built in Scotland in 1875 and lost with all hands off the coast of South Australia in 1905. She spent her entire career with the Glasgow Shipping Company, trading between Britain and Australia. The company was familiarly called the "Loch Line", as all of its ships were named after Scottish lochs. The ship was named after Loch Venachar, in what was then Perthshire.
The Derry Castle was a 1,367 ton iron barque built at Glasgow in 1883, and initially operating out of Limerick, Ireland. She had been registered there on 19 November 1883 by Francis Spaight & Sons. In 1887 while voyaging from Australia to the United Kingdom with a cargo of wheat, she foundered off Enderby Island, in the subantarctic Auckland Islands, on a reef which now bears her name.
SS Norwich City was a British cargo steamship. She was built in 1911 as Normanby, and renamed Norwich City in 1919. She was wrecked in the Pacific Ocean in 1929. For many years her wreck was a sea mark on the atoll of Nikumaroro. The wreck is now largely broken up.
City of Adelaide was an iron-hulled ship that was launched in Scotland in 1863, spent a long career in Australian passenger and cargo service, and sank off the coast of Queensland in 1916. She served with several Australian shipowners, including the Australasian Steam Navigation Company, Australasian United Steam Navigation Company and Howard Smith Company.

Recreational dive sites are specific places that recreational scuba divers go to enjoy the underwater environment or for training purposes. They include technical diving sites beyond the range generally accepted for recreational diving. In this context all diving done for recreational purposes is included. Professional diving tends to be done where the job is, and with the exception of diver training and leading groups of recreational divers, does not generally occur at specific sites chosen for their easy access, pleasant conditions or interesting features.

Hawk Channel is a shallow, elongated basin and navigable passage along the Atlantic coast of the Florida Keys. The channel makes up a smaller portion of the Florida Platform from Key West to the southernmost point of Key Biscayne and lies between the Keys and the Florida Reef Tract to the southeast. It connects the waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean through tidal exchanges crossing from the Florida Bay to the Straits of Florida.
