SS Binnendijk was a Holland America Line (NASM) cargo steamship. She was one of NASM's "B" class ships: the company's first cargo ships to be powered by steam turbines. Binnendijk was built in South Holland in 1921, and sunk by a mine in the English Channel in 1939. She was the first ship that NASM lost in the Second World War. Her wreck off the coast of Dorset, England is now a wreck diving site, nicknamed "The Benny".
Some sources anglicise the ship's name to Binnendyk. However, Lloyd's Register always recorded her as Binnendijk.
Until 1920, every NASM cargo ship was propelled by a reciprocating steam engine; in most cases triple-expansion. However, in April of that year C. van der Giessen & Zonen's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel laid down the first of a class of new ships of about 6,850 GRT for NASM. Each member of the class was to be driven by two Brown-Curtis steam turbines, driving a single screw via double-reduction gearing.
Van der Giessen launched the first ship in October 1920 as Burgerdijk, completed her in June 1921, [1] and went on to build three more members of the class. [2] [3] [4] Industrieële Maatschappij 'De Noord', on the Noord river in Alblasserdam built two, [5] including the final member of the class, Boschdijk, which was completed in October 1922. [6] Boele's Scheepswerven & Machinefabriek in Bolnes in South Holland built one, [7] and Maatschappij voor Scheeps- en Werktuigbouw Fijenoord in Rotterdam built one. [8]
'De Noord' built Binnendijk, which was the third member of the class to be completed. She was yard number 131, and was launched on 30 June 1921. Harland & Wolff built her turbines, so she was towed from the Noord to Belfast, Ireland, where she arrived on 1 October for them to be installed. She was completed on 18 December. [5]
Her lengths were 416.3 ft (126.9 m) overall and 400.4 ft (122.0 m) registered. Her beam was 54.3 ft (16.6 m) and her depth was 36.6 ft (11.2 m). Her tonnages were 6,873 GRT, 4,240 NRT and 9,939 DWT. Her holds had capacity for 527,000 cu ft (14,900 m3) of grain, or 478,000 cu ft (13,500 m3) of baled cargo. She also had three berths for first class passengers. [5]
The combined power output of Binnendijk's turbines was rated at 648 NHP [9] or 3,000 SHP. They gave her a speed of 12 knots (22 km/h). [5]
NASM registered Binnendijk at Rotterdam. Her code letters were NHBK. [9] She began her maiden voyage on 24 December 1921. [5]
In December 1929 Binnendijk was in Philadelphia when she was seriously damaged by fire. She returned to Rotterdam for repairs. [5]
By 1934 the call sign PDDB had supreseded Binnendijk's code letters. [10] Also in 1934, her accommodation was increased to carry seven passengers. [5] By 1937 she was equipped with wireless direction finding. [11]
In September 1939 Binnendijk left New York carrying general cargo, bound for Rotterdam. [12] On 7 October she was in the English Channel when the Royal Navy ordered her to put into Portland Harbour to allow her cargo to be inspected for contraband. It was sunset, so Binnendijk's Master, Captain WPJ Morée, requested permission to anchor for the night near the Shambles Sandbank, off Portland Bill. [13]
A month earlier, on 8 September, U-26 had mined the area. [14] By 22:00 hrs Binnendijk had detonated a magnetic mine about 2+1⁄2 nautical miles (4.6 km) southeast of the Shambles lightship. Captain Morée was on the bridge at the time. The explosion put her engines and wireless telegraph out of action, and she caught fire. Her crew fired rocket flares, which were answered. A British examination vessel came alongside and rescued all 42 members of her crew. [13]
The ship was burning from stem to stern when she sank the next day, at position 50°32′N2°20′W / 50.533°N 2.333°W , about 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) north of the lightship. [13] Sources disagree as to whether she sank at 02:00 [14] or 14:00 hrs. [12] On 10 October the Royal Navy used explosives to disperse her wreck. [12]
In 1930 Blijdendijk's cargo caught fire in the Gulf of Suez. She was declared a constructive total loss, and towed to Italy to be scrapped. [2]
In 1940 U-48 sank Burgerdijk [1] and U-47 sank Bilderdijk. [4] In 1941 Beemsterdijk was sunk by a mine, killing 39 of her crew. [8] Boschdijk was burnt out in the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, and towed to the Baltic in 1942, where the Luftwaffe sank her as target practice. [6] Also in 1942, U-68 sank Breedijk, killing her Master and a member of her crew. [7]
Blommersdijk was the only "B" class ship to survive the Second World War. In 1957 an Italian shipping company bought her and renamed her Vivara. She was scrapped in 1959. [3]
Binnendijk's wreck is on Lulworth Banks at a depth of 75 to 89 feet (23 to 27 m). The wreck is now much broken up, but parts stand 23 to 26 feet (7 to 8 m) above the seabed. As of 2012, many of her frames and hull plates were still intact. The most intact part was the stern. Enough of her engine room was extant for penetration diving. Parts of her cargo were still visible, including tyres, and copper wire. The wreck provides habitat for lobster, spider crabs, conger eel, pouting, pollock, and tompot blenny. The site is relatively sheltered by Portland Bill, but is near Portland Race, so can be subject to strong currents. [13]

SS Dwinsk was a transatlantic ocean liner that was launched in Ireland in 1897 as Rotterdam, renamed C. F. Tietgen in 1906, and renamed Dwinsk in 1913. A U-boat sank her in 1918, with the loss of 23 lives. The ship was built for Holland America Line, but was successively owned by Scandinavian America Line and Russian American Line, and after the Russian Revolution she was managed by Cunard Line.
Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, was a Dutch shipping line in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. It traded form 1888 to 1966. It was the dominant inter-island shipping line in the Dutch East Indies in the last half-century of the colonial era.
USS Maartensdijk was a cargo steamship that was laid down in England in 1902 as Egyptiana, but launched as Rapallo. She served in the United States Navy as USS Maartensdijk from 1918 until 1919, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID-2497.
SS 's Jacob was a passenger steamship that was launched in the Netherlands in 1907 and sunk by enemy action off New Guinea in 1943. She spent most of her career with Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, based in the Dutch East Indies.
SS Zaanland was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1900 for Dutch owners, and sunk in a collision in 1918. She was built for the Zuid-Amerika Lijn, which in 1908 became Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd. The US Government requisitioned her in March 1918 as USS Zaanland, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID–2746. She was sunk in a collision less than two months later.
USS Rondo (ID-2488) was a Dutch cargo steamship that was built for Stoomvaart Mattschappij Nederland in 1914. She served in the United States Navy from March 1918 until June 1919. She was scrapped in 1933.
USS Oosterdijk was a Holland America Line cargo steamship that was built in 1913 and sank as a result of a collision in 1918. She served in the United States Navy, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID–2586, from March 1918 until her loss that July. Some sources anglicise her name as Oosterdyk, but Lloyd's Register registered her with the Dutch spelling Oosterdijk.
USS Beukelsdijk was a Dutch-owned turret deck ship that was built in England in 1903 as Grängesberg. She was renamed Beukelsdijk in 1916 when she changed owners. In 1918 she was requisitioned as USS Beukelsdijk, with the Naval Registry Identification Number ID–3135. She returned to civilian service in 1919, and was wrecked in the Norwegian Sea in 1923.
SS Ophir was a Dutch steamship that was built in 1904. She carried passengers, cargo and mail between Rotterdam and the Dutch East Indies until March 1918, when the United States seized her under angary and she became USS Ophir (ID-2800). In November 1918 a fire and explosion damaged her beyond economic repair. She was scrapped in 1922.
SS Maasdam was a Dutch turbine steamship that was launched in 1920 and sunk in 1941. She was the third Holland America Line ship to be named after the village of Maasdam in South Holland.
