Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium is a cricket stadium located in Srinagar, India. It is home to the JKCA and Jammu and Kashmir cricket team which represents the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments in the country. National Cricket Academy is currently constructing an indoor complex at the stadium. [1]

International cricket

The venue has hosted two One Day International matches. In the first match India played West Indies on 13 October 1983. India batted first, but the match was affected due to the protests by Kashmiri Dambali from Handwara digging the pitch during the lunch interval. When the match resumed, rain and dust storms affected the play, and India scored 176 all out. West Indies scored 108 for no loss in 22.4 overs before rain ended play, and West Indies were declared winners as the revised target was 81 in 22 overs. Desmond Haynes (West Indies), who scored 55 not out, was named Man of the Match. [2]

In the second match India took on Australia on 9 September 1986. [3] India batted first, and a superb 52 off 56 balls by Sunil Gavaskar helped India score 222 for 8. In reply Australia achieved the target with 3 wickets in hand and 6 balls to go. Allan Border scored 90 not out off 106 balls and was named Man of the Match. [4] [5]

Use by the security forces and other activities

The venue was occupied by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for 18 years during which the city has seen a lot of militant violence.

The National Conference held a special session at Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in 2002 to elect a new president. [6] In 2003, then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee addressed a rally at the ground which was attended by 20,000 people. [7] On 7 November 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public rally at Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium, in Srinagar. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was also present. [8]

Revamp

In November 2007, the CRPF decided to vacate the venue. The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association has planned to renovate the stadium. First-class cricket resumed there in 2009. [9] The Final of 2021 Swarnim Vijay Varsh Kashmir Premier League was played between Badgam Braves and Shahi Shopian at Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium, Srinagar on 29 August 2021. [10]

Name change proposal

There has been talk of changing the name of the stadium to "Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium". [11] [12] However this has not been implemented by the government. [13] [14]

He is the first Indian batsman to hit a century in all three formats of international cricket. During his time with India, he won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Raina made history being the first Indian to score a century in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which he did with his 101 runs against South Africa at the 2010 Tournament.

The Jammu and Kashmir cricket team is a cricket team based in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, run by JKCA. It is in the Elite Group C of the Ranji Trophy. Its main home ground is the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar, and it also plays at Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground in Jammu.

Rasool was the second cricketer after Mithun Manhas from Jammu and Kashmir to have played in The IPL and the first from the state to play for the Indian National Team in ODI's and T20I's. The 1962–63 Ranji Trophy was the 29th season of the Ranji Trophy. Bombay won the title defeating Rajasthan in the final. The tournament was severely impacted by the Chinese Aggression of 1962. Services and Railways pulled out of the tournament after playing one game each. Being so close to the action Assam and Odisha had to pull out of the tournament. When the ceasefire was ordered, the invaders were only a few kilometres away from Tezpur, which was the headquarters of Assam cricket. Bihar played one match and then closed their season as most of their players were employed in firms and factories which were pressed into defence production.

Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

The Kashmir Premier League (KPL) is a Twenty20 cricket league in Jammu and Kashmir The league was started in 2011 by the Indian Army and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. The Army sponsors the teams, and provides cricket kits and refreshments. The purpose of the Kashmir Premier League is to build bridges between Kashmiris and Indian Army men. The league is the brainchild of Group Officer Commanding (GOC) of XV Corps, Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain. The T20 cricket tournament is part of the Indian Army's Operation Sadhbhavana.
