Sports in Punjab

Various types of sports are played in Punjab. Both Indian Punjab [1] and Pakistani Punjab [2] have separate sports boards to undertake most of the sports activities in their respective regions. Also many many private organizations, universities and schools held their sporting events as well. [3] Punjab youth festival is an annual event in Pakistani Punjab that is very famous in terms of audience participation. [4] Also local boards make sure to have international collaborations when necessary to improve standards in certain sports. [5]

Since Punjab have a huge foreign diaspora so they arrange certain events in other countries as well. [6] Recently rugby is gaining traction in Punjab and Pakistan's first under-16 rugby team has been selected from Faisalabad Punjab to play in the World Rugby under-16 tournament. [7]

The Government of the Punjab is the provincial government of the Pakistani province of the Punjab. It is based in Lahore, the provincial capital. Its powers and structure are set out in the provisions of the Constitution, in which 41 districts come under its authority and jurisdiction. The government includes the cabinet, selected from members the Punjab Provincial Assembly, and the non-political civil staff within each department. The province is governed by a unicameral legislature with the head of government known as the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister, invariably the leader of a political party represented in the Assembly, selects members of the Cabinet. The Chief Minister and Cabinet are thus responsible for the functioning of government and are entitled to remain in office so long as it maintains the confidence of the elected Assembly. The head of the province is known as the Governor, appointed by the federal government, on behalf of the President. The administrative and executive boss of the province is the Chief Secretary Punjab and they head all the provincial departments and the provincial cabinet.

Sport in Pakistan is a significant part of Pakistani culture. Cricket is the most popular sport in Pakistan. Football has also gained popularity in recent years, and is the second most popular sport in the country. Field hockey is the national sport, and was popular for several decades, with some of Pakistan's greatest sporting accomplishments having taken place in this sport, along with squash. Polo and traditional sports like kabaddi and other well-known games are also played.

It is currently used mostly for football matches and serves as the home venue for the Pakistan Railways football team, and also served as one of the primary venues for the Pakistan national football team in the 1990s. The stadium can accommodate around 5,000 spectators. It is owned by the Pakistan Railways Sports Board.

The 2020 Kabaddi World Cup or 2020 Tapal Tezdum Kabbadi World Cup was the seventh edition of the Kabaddi World Cup, held from 9 February to 16 February 2020 with the Opening Ceremony on 9 February 2020 at the Punjab Stadium, Lahore. The tournament was played in Punjab, Pakistan.
