Background

Since the 2008 presidential election, Virginia has voted Democratic for president, which is due in part to Northern Virginia's growth and Democratic trends. Democrats control both U.S. Senate seats and have a 6–5 majority in the House of Representatives. [1]

In the 2025 attorney general election, Jay Jones defeated incumbent attorney general Jason Miyares by 6.69%. He was elected the first black attorney general in the state, despite public dislike of his "violent text messages". [2] In the concurrent elections, Democrats won all three statewide executive offices and expanded their majority in the House of Delegates to a 64–36 majority, which created a trifecta in Virginia's government.
