TBD

The 2029 Virginia gubernatorial election will be held on November 6, 2029, to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election will be concurrent with other elections for Virginia's statewide offices, the House of Delegates, and other various political offices. Incumbent Democratic governor Abigail Spanberger is ineligible to run for re-election, as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms.

Background

Since the 2008 presidential election, Virginia has voted Democratic for president, which is due in part to Northern Virginia's growth and Democratic trends. Democrats control both U.S. Senate seats and have a 6-5 majority in the House of Representatives. [1]

In the 2025 gubernatorial election, Spanberger defeated Winsome Earle-Sears by a 15-point margin. Spanberger won the election due to concern on the economy and issues in the federal workforce. [2] Democrats won all three statewide executive offices and expanded their majority by 13 seats to a 64-36 majority in the House of Delegates, which created a Democratic trifecta in Virginia's government. [3] [4]

Since 1977, Virginia has elected the party out of presidential power for governor, with the exception of 2013. In 2025, Spanberger won the governor's office as Republican Donald Trump was in the White House. [5]
