Pallara is an outer southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. [3] In the 2021 census, Pallara had a population of 16,461 people. [4]

Geography

Pallara is 24.3 kilometres (15.1 mi) by road south of the Brisbane GPO. [5]

History

The name Pallara means flat land and is derived from a non-local Aboriginal word spelt with only one "l". [6]

The suburb is relatively undeveloped with electricity supply only reaching Pallara in 1961.[ citation needed ]

Ritchie Road State School opened on 24 August 1959. The name was later changed to Pallara State School. [7]

In 1997, the Pallara Parklands were opened on a remediated dump. [6]

Demographics

In the 2021 census, the population of Pallara was 16,461, 50.8% female and 49.2% male. [4] The median age of the Pallara population was 31 years of age, 7 years below the Australian median. 42.4% of people living in Pallara were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 66.7%. 36.8% of people spoke only English at home. The most common responses for religion were No Religion 26.6% and Hinduism 16.1%. [4]

Education

Pallara State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at 39 Ritchie Road ( 27°37′44″S152°59′36″E / 27.6290°S 152.9934°E / -27.6290; 152.9934 (Pallara State School) ). [8] [9] As at August 2021, the school had an enrolment of 866 students with 52 teachers (50 full-time equivalent) and 32 non-teaching staff (21 full-time equivalent). [10]

There are no secondary schools in Pallara. The nearest government secondary schools are Forest Lake State High School in neighbouring Forest Lake to the west, Glenala State High School in Durack to the north-west, and Calamvale Community College in Calamvale to the east. [11]
