The Ukraine Yellow Kitchen Photo is a 2023 photo by Yan Dobronosov that captures the aftermath of the 2023 Dnipro residential building airstrike that hit the home of boxing coach Mykhailo Korenovsky. It was widely shared online in January 2023.
Olga and Mykhailo Korenovsky and their two daughters lived in the 9-story housing block in Dnipro, Ukraine. [1] [2] Mykhailo (Ukrainian: Михайло Кореновський) was the boxing coach for Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. [3]
The Ukraine Yellow Kitchen Photo is a drone image taken by Yan Dobronosov on January 15, 2023. [4] The image includes the Korenovsky family kitchen and a table in the centre with a bowl of fruit on top. [5]
Dobronosov first photographed the kitchen without a drone, but returned to the location upon reviewing his day's work to take a drone photo. [6] The image captures the devastation caused by the 2023 Dnipro residential building airstrike that fatally struck the kitchen of the Korenovsky family. [4] [7] The image was widely shared online in January 2023. [8] The Ukrainian Army stated that the strike was delivered from a X-22 Russian missile. [3]
Mykhailo Korenovsky died in the strike, Olga and their daughters were out for a walk at the time and survived. [9]
The images provoked contemplation from social media users. [8] Commenting on the photo, member of the Ukrainian Parliament Zoya Yarosh wrote "Here people cooked, had kitchen conversations, celebrated holidays, laughed, argued...These are the wounds on the body of Ukraine. Wounds on our homes." [8] The Wall Street Journal described the kitchen as "a symbol for Russian cruelty." [5]
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission commented "The latest symbolof Russia's terror is a yellow kitchen." [5]
The Storm Shadow is an Anglo-French low-observable, long-range, stealth air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. "Storm Shadow" is the weapon's British name; in France it is called SCALP-EG. The missile is based on the French-developed Apache anti-runway cruise missile, but differs in that it carries a unitary warhead instead of cluster munitions.

It was designed for use against aircraft carriers and carrier battle groups, with either a conventional or nuclear warhead. On 24 February 2022, the Chuhuiv Air Base in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine was the target of an air strike by Russian forces as part of the Northeastern Ukraine offensive during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian authorities and armed forces have committed war crimes by carrying out deliberate attacks against civilian targets and indiscriminate attacks in densely populated areas. The Russian military exposed the civilian population to unnecessary and disproportionate harm by using cluster munitions and by firing other explosive weapons with wide-area effects such as bombs, missiles, heavy artillery shells and multiple launch rockets. As of the beginning of July 2023, the attacks had resulted in the documented deaths of between 9,300 and 16,500 civilians. The Zaporizhzhia residential building airstrike occurred at an apartment block in Zaporizhzhia, in the early morning of 9 October 2022. The missile attack, carried out by the Russian Armed Forces, killed at least 13 people and injured more than 89 others.
During the autumn and winter of 2022–2023, Russia launched waves of missile and drone strikes against energy infrastructure as part of its invasion of Ukraine. The strikes targeted civilian areas beyond the battlefield, particularly critical power infrastructure, which is considered a war crime.

On 14 January 2023 at about 3:30 p.m., a Russian Kh-22 missile struck a nine-story residential building in Dnipro, Ukraine, on Naberezhna Peremohy St, 118, Sobornyi District in the right-bank part of the city, destroying one entrance and 236 apartments. On 19 January the official casualty rate was stated as 46 people killed and 80 injured and 11 people reported missing. 14 children were reported injured, and 39 inhabitants were rescued. The destruction left about 400 people homeless. The strike was part of months-long campaign of Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure that also had hit Dnipro.

On 14 April 2023, on Orthodox Christian Good Friday, a Russian S-300 missile strike struck residential buildings in Sloviansk, Ukraine, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 15 civilians were killed and 24 were injured. 34 apartment buildings, administrative buildings and shops were damaged in the blasts.
During the night of 28 April 2023, around 4 a.m., Russia launched more than 20 Kh-101/X-101 long range missile strikes against residential buildings in Uman, Ukraine, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 23 civilians were killed, including three children, while nine were injured. Uman was located 200 miles away from any front line in the Russo-Ukrainian War. In one building, 27 out of 46 apartments were destroyed by the blast.
