Digital Catapult is the UK innovation agency for advanced digital technology, developed in conjunction with Innovate UK (former Technology Strategy Board) as part of the Catapult centres. Digital Catapult works with startups, industries, investors, public sector and academia to accelerates the adoption of new and emerging technologies, with the aim of driving regional, national and international growth for UK businesses across the economy.

Chief executives

Neil Crockett was Digital Catapult's founding CEO, serving from January 2013 to June 2016.

He was succeeded by Jeremy Silver in June 2016, who served as chief executive officer for three years. [1]

The current CEO is Susan Bowen, who took over from Silver in March 2024. [2]

Function

Digital Catapult focuses on how digital technologies are applied in areas including supply chains, digital infrastructure and cyber-physical systems, acting in a similar way to a business incubator. It's technology expertise includes artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, distributed systems, immersive technology (AR, VR), telecommunications (5G), quantum computing and the Internet of things.

It offers organisations accelerator programmes, consultancy, collaborative research & development, and the setup and operation of testbed facilities.

Locations

Digital Catapult has centres supporting regions across the UK, based in London, Sunderland, Belfast and Bristol.

London

Digital Catapult [3] is located in the London Borough of Camden, at 101 Euston Road, opposite the British Library and close to St Pancras railway station.

North East Tees Valley

Digital Catapult NETV [4] is based out of Sunderland in North East England, and runs the NETV Immersive Lab [5] at PROTO [6] in Gateshead.

Northern Ireland

Digital Catapult Northern Ireland [7] is in the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast.

South West

Digital Catapult South West [8] is located in Cathedral Square [9] near the centre of Bristol.

Testbeds and labs

Digital catapult has set up a number of testbed facilities across the UK where organisations can experiment with digital technologies, including:

Advanced Media Production facility

Operated with Target3D, a space for exploring the evolution of media production, using AI, 5G, cloud rendering and edge computing.

Immersive labs

Labs based in Belfast, Gateshead and London that offer augmented and virtual reality equipment to businesses of all sizes, academia and researchers.

SONIC Labs

A collaboration between Digital Catapult and Ofcom that offers Open RAN interoperability testing. [10]

Ali Hossaini is an American artist, philosopher, theatrical producer, television producer, and businessperson. In 2010, The New York Times described him as a "biochemist turned philosopher turned television producer turned visual poet". In 2017 Hossaini published the Manual of Digital Museum Planning and subsequently became co-director of National Gallery X, a King's College London partnership that explores the future of art and cultural institutions. Prior to National Gallery X Hossaini worked with King's College to develop Connected Culture, an action research programme that tested cultural applications for 5G supported by Ericsson. As a working artist and producer, Hossaini's genre-spanning career includes installations, performances and hundreds of media projects. Since 2018 Hossaini has worked with security think tank Royal United Services Institute and, in a 2019 special edition of its journal, he assessed the threat from AI from the perspective of biology.

Catapult centres are a network of nine organisations set up by Innovate UK in the United Kingdom, to promote research and development (R&D) and to exploit market opportunities. Catapult centres promote R&D and innovation through business-led collaboration between scientists, academics, engineers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and Government. They receive grants from public funds but are also expected to seek commercial funding. The first tranche of Catapults were established in 2011.

Dimitra E. Simeonidou is a Professor of High Performance Networks at the University of Bristol. She works on the development of telecommunications networks, including 5G, and is a specialist in smart city infrastructures.

Jason Kingdon is a computer scientist and entrepreneur. He was previously CEO of Blue Prism and co-founder of several AI companies. He was co-founder of UCL's Intelligent Systems Lab where he introduced the use of a neural network in live financial forecasting, and co-founder and CEO of Searchspace, a company that applied AI to detect money laundering and detect insider dealing at banks and stock exchanges. In 2008, he joined Blue Prism as executive chairman. The company has been credited with creating the Robotic Process Automation market.

The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) monitors Europe's overall digital performance and tracks the progress of European Union (EU) countries regarding their digital competitiveness. On an annual basis, it monitors the performance of member states in digital connectivity, digital skills, online activity and digital public services in order to assess the state of digitalization of each member state as well as to identify areas requiring priority investment and action.

In telecommunications, 6G is the designation for a future technical standard of a sixth-generation technology for wireless communications.

Nvidia GTC is a global artificial intelligence (AI) conference for developers that brings together developers, engineers, researchers, inventors, and IT professionals. Topics focus on AI, computer graphics, data science, machine learning and autonomous machines. Each conference begins with a keynote from Nvidia CEO and founder Jensen Huang, followed by a variety of sessions and talks with experts from around the world.

The 2024 AI Seoul Summit was co-hosted by the South Korean and British governments. The Seoul Declaration was adopted to address artificial intelligence technology and related challenges and opportunities.
