Throughout the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city of Kherson has been shelled multiple times. These attacks intensified following the liberation of Kherson.

Shelling of 3 May 2023

In the Korabelny district, the Russians fired at the only working "Epitsentr" hypermarket in the city, in the center of the city, the "ATB" supermarket, the "OKKO" gas station, a hardware store, residential buildings, a factory and a railway station came under fire. During the day, 539 shells were fired at the city from artillery, tanks, BM-21 Grad, UAVs and aviation. [1]

In addition, several other settlements in the region were shelled. In particular, three energy workers were killed near the village of Stepanivka, and a local resident died in his own yard in Tokarivka. [2]

As of the morning of the next day, it was known that around 23 dead and another 46 wounded in Kherson and the region, including two children. [3] On May 8, one of the wounded died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 24. [4]

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, published a photo with the consequences of the attack on himself in the Telegram channel, writing:

The world must see and know this. A train station and transfer station, a house, a hardware store, a grocery store, a gas station - do you know what these places have in common? The bloody trail left by Russia with its shells, killing civilians in Kherson and the Kherson region. As of now, 21 people have died! 48 wounded! All civilians! In one incomplete day! In one area! My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. We will never forgive the guilty. Let's defeat the evil country and make all the guilty answer! [5]

The head of the Kherson regional state administration Oleksandr Prokudin announced the announcement of a long curfew in Kherson from Friday evening until Monday morning. In addition, the regional military administration announced three days of mourning on May 4, 5 and 6, starting at 12 noon on May 4. [3]

Attacks following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam

On 8 June 2023, Russia shelled Kherson and other localities of the region as evacuation efforts following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam continued. [6] Zelenskyy visited Kherson and other flooded areas of Kherson Oblast on the same day. [7]

It was administrated under a Russian-controlled military-civilian administration until 30 September 2022, when it was illegally annexed to become an unrecognized federal subject of Russia.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there have been numerous incidents of Ukrainians collaborating with Russia to undermine Ukraine from within. This phenomenon, which has had a significantly negative impact on the country's aspiration and ability to recover the Russian-occupied territories, has involved both countries' politicians, military officials and soldiers, and ordinary citizens. In response, the Ukrainian government has adopted new legislation that enables the targeting of collaborators by more specifically defining collaborationist acts and by introducing strict punishments for Ukrainians who are found to have colluded with the Russian military campaign in any capacity.

There have been attacks in mainland Russia as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022. The main targets have been the military, the arms industry and the oil industry. Many of the attacks have been drone strikes, firebombing, and rail sabotage. The Ukrainian intelligence services have acknowledged carrying out some of these attacks. Others have been carried out by anti-war activists in Russia. There have also been cross-border shelling, missile strikes, and covert raids from Ukraine, mainly in Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk oblasts. Several times, Ukrainian-based paramilitaries launched incursions into Russia, captured border villages and battled the Russian military. These were carried out by units made up mainly of Russian emigrants. While Ukraine supported these ground incursions, it denied direct involvement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Attacks on civilians in the Russian invasion of Ukraine</span>

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military have carried out deliberate attacks against civilian targets and indiscriminate attacks in densely-populated areas. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine says the Russian military exposed the civilian population to unnecessary and disproportionate harm by using cluster bombs and by firing other weapons with wide-area effects into civilian areas, such as missiles, heavy artillery shells and multiple launch rockets. As of 2024, the attacks had resulted in the UN-documented deaths of between 11,000 and estimated 40,000 dead civilians. On 22 April 2022, the UN reported that of the 2,343 civilian casualties it had been able to document, it could confirm 92.3% of these deaths were as a result of the actions of the Russian armed forces.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Liberation of Kherson</span> November 2022 event during the Russo-Ukrainian War

On 11 November 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated and recaptured the city of Kherson and other areas of the Kherson Oblast and parts of the Mykolaiv Oblast on the right bank of the Dnipro River from Russian control. The Russian Armed Forces, which had occupied the city since 2 March 2022, withdrew and retreated to the left bank of the Kherson Oblast over the course of 9–11 November 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">25 May 2024 Kharkiv missile strikes</span>

Air strikes on Kharkiv were carried out by the Russian Armed Forces in four locations on 25 May 2024. At least one UMPB D-30SN bomb was dropped at an Epicentr K hypermarket, destroying it. Russian forces dropped another bomb on the central park of culture and recreation, but it did not detonate. In the evening, Russian forces hit a street in a dense residential area of the city. At least two of the victims killed in the airstrike were Epicentr store employees.
