Throughout the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city of Kherson has been shelled multiple times. These attacks intensified following the liberation of Kherson.
In the Korabelny district, the Russians fired at the only working "Epitsentr" hypermarket in the city, in the center of the city, the "ATB" supermarket, the "OKKO" gas station, a hardware store, residential buildings, a factory and a railway station came under fire. During the day, 539 shells were fired at the city from artillery, tanks, BM-21 Grad, UAVs and aviation. [1]
In addition, several other settlements in the region were shelled. In particular, three energy workers were killed near the village of Stepanivka, and a local resident died in his own yard in Tokarivka. [2]
As of the morning of the next day, it was known that around 23 dead and another 46 wounded in Kherson and the region, including two children. [3] On May 8, one of the wounded died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 24. [4]
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, published a photo with the consequences of the attack on himself in the Telegram channel, writing:
The world must see and know this. A train station and transfer station, a house, a hardware store, a grocery store, a gas station - do you know what these places have in common? The bloody trail left by Russia with its shells, killing civilians in Kherson and the Kherson region. As of now, 21 people have died! 48 wounded! All civilians! In one incomplete day! In one area! My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. We will never forgive the guilty. Let's defeat the evil country and make all the guilty answer! [5]
The head of the Kherson regional state administration Oleksandr Prokudin announced the announcement of a long curfew in Kherson from Friday evening until Monday morning. In addition, the regional military administration announced three days of mourning on May 4, 5 and 6, starting at 12 noon on May 4. [3]
On 8 June 2023, Russia shelled Kherson and other localities of the region as evacuation efforts following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam continued. [6] Zelenskyy visited Kherson and other flooded areas of Kherson Oblast on the same day. [7]
Rustem Enverovych Umerov is a Ukrainian politician, businessman, investor, philanthropist and the current Defence Minister of Ukraine. Umerov is a Muslim, and of Crimean Tatar origin.
Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi is a Ukrainian military officer. Holding the rank of colonel general, he has served as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 8 February 2024. Previously, he was the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024, and the commander of the Joint Forces Operation from May to August 2019.
Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhnyi is a Ukrainian four-star general and diplomat who is currently serving as Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom. He served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from 27 July 2021 until 8 February 2024. He was also concurrently a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
The following is a list of events from the year 2022 in Ukraine.
On 24 February 2022, the first day of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, a military engagement began in and around Okhtyrka, a city in the Sumy Oblast of Ukraine. Fighting took place in the outskirts of the city as Russian forces attempted to occupy the city. The initial advance was repelled, and the city was attacked by artillery fire. On March 26, 2022, it was reported that the strategic stronghold of Trostianets was taken back by Ukrainian forces. This disrupted Russian communications and supply routes, threatening the Russian front.
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting Russian occupation of multiple Ukrainian towns and cities, numerous cases of non-violent resistance against the invasion took place. Local residents organised protests against the invasion and blocked the movement of Russian military equipment. The Russian military dispersed the protests, sometimes with live fire, injuring many and killing some. Most of the large protests ended in March.
During the southern Ukraine offensive of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city of Odesa and the surrounding region have been the target of shelling and air strikes by Russian forces on multiple occasions since the conflict began, fired predominantly from Russian warships situated offshore in the Black Sea. The city has also been targeted by Russian cruise missiles.
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine there has been military and political collaborationism between Ukrainian citizens and officials and the Russian military.
Derussification in Ukraine is a process of removing Russian influence from the post-Soviet country of Ukraine. This derussification started after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and intensified with the demolition of monuments to Lenin during Euromaidan in 2014 and the further systemic process of decommunization in Ukraine. The Russo-Ukrainian War gave a strong impetus to the process. Along with decommunization, derussification has been described as one of the components of a larger process of decolonization in Ukraine.
The 2022–present bombing of Lviv and the Lviv Oblast began after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Lviv Oblast was attacked from March–November, and Lviv city from May–October 2022. The targets were both civilian and military, including electricity and railway infrastructure and a military base. Seven civilians were killed.
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military have carried out deliberate attacks against civilian targets and indiscriminate attacks in densely-populated areas. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine says the Russian military exposed the civilian population to unnecessary and disproportionate harm by using cluster bombs and by firing other weapons with wide-area effects into civilian areas, such as missiles, heavy artillery shells and multiple launch rockets. As of 2024, the attacks had resulted in the UN-documented deaths of between 11,000 and estimated 40,000 dead civilians. On 22 April 2022, the UN reported that of the 2,343 civilian casualties it had been able to document, it could confirm 92.3% of these deaths were as a result of the actions of the Russian armed forces.

On September 30, 2022, the Russian Armed Forces reportedly launched S-300 missiles at a civilian convoy, killing 32 people, both adults and children, and injuring 86 more.
Russian occupiers carried out a series of artillery fire and air raids in the city of Kryvyi Rih during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding region became the target of repeated Russian shelling and bombing as part of the southern Ukraine offensive from 27 February 2022 onwards. Oleksandr Heorhiiovych Tarnavskyi is a Ukrainian military officer and brigadier general who rose to prominence during the Russo-Ukraine War due to his leading role during the counteroffensive in southern Ukraine in 2022 and 2023. He is the former Commander of the Tavria operational-strategic group and the former Commander of the Sloboda operational-strategic group. He is also a Knight of all degrees of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II 1939 – 1945 is a national holiday and non-working day in Ukraine established in 2023. Its first celebration was in 2024. The holiday is celebrated on May 8 and has replaced Victory Day over Nazism in World War II that was previously celebrated on May 9, from 2015 to 2023.
On 6 January 2024, at around 3:00 pm local time, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Army launched an S-300 missile attack against a residential building in Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, as a result of which 12 people died, including 6 children.
Air strikes on Kharkiv were carried out by the Russian Armed Forces in four locations on 25 May 2024. At least one UMPB D-30SN bomb was dropped at an Epicentr K hypermarket, destroying it. Russian forces dropped another bomb on the central park of culture and recreation, but it did not detonate. In the evening, Russian forces hit a street in a dense residential area of the city. At least two of the victims killed in the airstrike were Epicentr store employees.
