The British nominations were led by Skyfall , Life of Pi , Les Misérables and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel , the first three of which went on to receive large numbers of technical awards. In terms of main awards categories, Daniel Day-Lewis won many for the American film Lincoln and the Americans Ang Lee and Anne Hathaway won for Life of Pi and Les Misérables respectively. They did, however, notably lose out to Argo and Django Unchained (both from the United States).

The 85th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2012 and took place on February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles beginning at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time Zone (PST) / 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time Zone (EST). The ceremony was the first in the Academy's 85-year history to adopt the phrase "The Oscars" as the ceremony's official name during the broadcast and marketing. During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented Academy Awards in 24 categories. The ceremony was televised in the United States by ABC, and produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and directed by Don Mischer. Actor Seth MacFarlane hosted the show for the first time.

The 70th Golden Globe Awards honoring the best in film and television of 2012, was broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 13, 2013, by NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted. Nominations were announced on December 13 by Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and Ed Helms. The Cecil B. DeMille Award, honoring the lifetime achievements of actors and filmmakers, was announced on November 1, 2012, with Jodie Foster being the latest recipient of that trophy. The ceremony was produced by Dick Clark Productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The 17th Satellite Awards is an award ceremony honoring the year's outstanding performers, films, television shows, home videos and interactive media, presented by the International Press Academy at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City, Los Angeles.

The 11th Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards were held on December 10, 2012.

The 33rd London Film Critics' Circle Awards, honouring the best in film for 2012, were announced by the London Film Critics' Circle on 20 January 2013.

The 17th Art Directors Guild Awards, which were given on February 2, 2013, honored the best production designers of 2012.
