Early Years

Devasahayam did his college education at Pope's College at Sawyerpuram and gained Bachelor of Divinity from Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary.

Ecclesiastical Ministry

Devasahayam was ordained as Deacon in 1983 and as Presbyter in 1984 by S. Daniel Abraham, Bishop of Tirunelveli. He was elected and selected as the Bishop of Thoothukudi - Nazareth Diocese of the Church of South India on June 2017 and consecrated bishop at St. John's Cathedral, Nazareth on 11 June 2017 by CSI Moderator Thomas K Oommen.

Devasahayam Pillai Indian beatified layman

Devasahayam Pillai, born Neelakanta Pillai in the Kingdom of Travancore, is a beatified Indian layman of the Latin Church. Born into a Hindu family in the 18th century, he converted to Catholicism and is considered a martyr of the Christian faith. Pillai was an official in the court of the King of Travancore, Maharaja Marthanda Varma, when he came under the influence of Dutch naval commander, Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, who instructed him in the Catholic faith. He is believed to have been killed by the Travancore state for upholding his Christian faith.

Oyangudi is a small village situated near Nazareth in Thoothukudi District of Tamil Nadu, India. Nazareth is 2.5 km away from Oyangudi. There are about 200 families are living in this village. More than 250 houses are there in this village. It is belongs to the Mukkuperi panchayet. A C.S.I Church is located at the center of the village. An E.R.S Church is situated on the west side of main street. There are four streets are there in Oyangudi. They are West Street, East Street, North Street, and South Street. A post office located at the south street. A water tank is located on the east street. A road from Nazareth to Tiruchendur divides North part and South part. In the southern part a railway road is crossing from East to Westwardly from Tiruchendur to Tirunelveli.

Bishop T. B. D. Prakasa Rao was the fourth CSI-Bishop - in - Krishna-Godavari of the Protestant Church of South India who occupied the Cathedra placed at CSI-St. Paul's Cathedral, Vijayawada. The Bishopric of Prakasa Rao lasted for two decades from 1981 through 2001, one of the longest in the history of the Church of South India Society. Prakasa Rao led the bishopric of Krishna-Godavari that comprised the Christian missions established by the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) which merged its South India Christian missions in India into the Church of South India Society which was inaugurated in 1947 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Madras.

Christianity in Tamil Nadu

Christianity in the state of Tamil Nadu, India is the second largest religion in the state. It is believed to date back to 1st century CE. According to tradition, St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, landed in Malabar Coast in 52 CE. In the colonial age a large number of Portuguese, Dutch, British and Italian Christians came to Tamil Nadu. Priests accompanied them not only to minister the colonisers but also to spread the Christian faith among the non-Christians in Tamil Nadu. Currently, Christians are a minority community comprising 6% of the total population.
