The Sherpa Light is a family of 4x4 tactical and light armored vehicles developed by French company Renault Trucks Defense (RTD). Available in unarmoured or armoured variants (ballistic, mine and IED kits), the Scout is suited for tactical missions such as scouting, patrol, convoy escort and command and liaison. It is able to transport up to 4 or 5 soldiers or a total payload of up to 4 tonnes. [2]
The Sherpa family is also available to customers in North America and Oceania via Mack Defense. [3] [4]
The Sherpa 2/3 was officially unveiled to the public at Eurosatory 2006 in Paris. [5] [6] with first production models made in 2007. [7] [8] In 2010, it changed the name from Sherpa 2 and 3 to Light. [9] [10]
The Sherpa Light was shown in Asia in the BRIDEX 2011 convention alongside the VAB Mk II in Brunei on July 28, 2011. [11]
On October 26, 2011, Pindad showed off an Indonesian-made version of the Sherpa known as the Elang during a public exhibition event. [12]
Mack Defense unveiled the Mack Sherpa Light Scout for the first time at the 2014 Association of the United States Army AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition (AUSA) event in Washington DC. [13] In 2017, Mack promoted the Sherpa Special Forces variant at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Tampa, Florida. [14]
In April 2014, Avibras has entered the TUPI to be assessed at the Brazilian Army Assessments Center (CAEx). [15] [16] Based on the Sherpa Light Scout chassis under cooperation between Avibras and Renault, [17] it is meant to be marketed to the Brazilian Army for a new Wheeled Multirole Light Armored Vehicle under the Viatura Blindada Multitarefa - Leve de Rodas (VBMT - LR; Lightweight Wheeled Multirole Protected Vehicle) program against the Iveco LMV with a contract decision before the end of 2015. In 2015, MACK-made Sherpas were presented to the National Guard of Ukraine for potential purchases and evaluation. [20]
In 2016, requirements from French Special Operations Command resulted in the development of the Poids Lourd Forces Spéciales for rapid response operations. [21] The PLFS was first shown at the Eurosatory 2016 exhibit on June 13, 2016. [22] It was officially certified by the Direction générale de l'armement on January 31, 2017. [23] In Brazil, the TUPI lost a potential contract for the Brazilian Army's VBMT-LR program when the Brazilian Army announced on April 14, 2016 that the Iveco LMV will be selected as the new 4x4 vehicle, [24] followed by another announcement on September 1, 2016 that 1,464 LMVs will be purchased instead. [25]
After RTD was rebranded as Arquus on May 24, 2018, [26] research and development continued on the Sherpa, which led to the creation of the Sabre [27] as its first Arquus-branded product when it was unveiled at the 2019 Special Forces at the Defense Exhibition (SOFINS) exhibit. [10] Field tests were conducted with an MMP missile fired from the Sabre under the direction of the Direction Générale de l’Armement as of February 2021. [28]
On May 19, 2020, Arquus announced the successful production of the 1000th Sherpa Light vehicle. [29]
At the EDEX 2021 convention, it was announced that Arquus will collaborate with the Egyptian Ministry of Defence Vehicle Department – Engineering Industrial Complex. [30] The chassis is provided by Arquus. [31]
On September 22, 2021, Arquus has offered to work with Romania in manufacturing the Sherpa Light under license under a proposal for greater French-Romanian defense cooperation. [32]
It was reported in SOFINS 2023 that the 25 Sabres used by French special forces from 2017 were given unsatisfactory results in road handling and stability, so they were returned back to Arquuus. [33] All of them were retrofitted back on feedback. [33]
A Sherpa APC was on display at MILIPOL 2023 on November 15, 2023 in use with the BRI. [34]

Renault Trucks is a French commercial truck manufacturer with corporate headquarters at Saint-Priest near Lyon. Originally part of Renault, it has been a subsidiary of Volvo since 2001.
The Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé or VAB is a French armoured personnel carrier and support vehicle designed and manufactured by Renault Trucks Defense. It entered French service in 1979 and around 5,000 were produced for the French Army as well as for export. It has seen combat in various conflicts in Africa, Asia as well as Europe and has also been exported to more than 15 countries.
The P4 is an unarmoured off-road vehicle used by the military of France. It was manufactured by Peugeot but is now manufactured by Panhard. It is to be replaced with the PVP by Panhard. The P4 is a derivative of the Mercedes Geländewagen military version built under license by Peugeot for the French military. Peugeot did not have a licence to export the vehicle anywhere else than to the countries bound to France by defence agreements.
ACMAT is a French manufacturer of cross-country and tactical military vehicles since 1958. Known for their reliability, simplicity, ruggedness and their 80% commonality of parts across the entire product line, these vehicles were originally targeted at African and Asian countries who could not afford more expensive vehicles. The ACMAT company built their vehicles based on standardisation, commonality of parts and components, and on interchangeability; parts are interchangeable with vehicles built 30 years ago. Parts commonality includes cabs, structural components, engines and drive trains. ACMAT uses many of the same parts for all of its line of vehicles. They even produce an armoured variant of both the 4x4 and 6x6 versions of the VLRA.
Astros II is a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher produced in Brazil by the Avibras company. It features modular design and employs rockets with calibers ranging from 127 to 450 mm. It was developed on the basis of a Tectran VBT-2028 6×6 all-terrain vehicle for enhanced mobility based on Mercedes-Benz 2028 truck chassis while later versions use Tatra 815-7 chassis.
The Dragoon 300 AFV was produced by Arrowpointe Corporation during the 1980s. It was based on the automotive components of the United States Army's M113 APCs and 5-ton trucks. It resembles a larger V-150 Commando.
The Cobra is a family of armoured tactical vehicle developed by Turkish firm Otokar. It is produced in two generations – the Cobra I and the Cobra II. The first generation has some subsystems from the Humvee. The second generation was designed as an improvement over the first with better mobility, payload capacity, and enhanced protection against ballistic and mine threats.
The Iveco LMV is a 4WD tactical vehicle developed by Iveco, and in service with several countries. After its adoption by the Italian Army as the Veicolo-Tattico-Leggero-Multiruolo (VTLM) Lince, it won the Future Command and Liaison Vehicle (FCLV) competition of the British Army as the Panther, but the fleet was put up for sale in 2018.
The Berliet VXB-170 is a four-wheel armoured vehicle used primarily as an internal security vehicle. Developed and initially produced by Berliet until Berliet was merged with Saviem to form Renault Trucks, it lost to the Saviem VAB the competition to equip the French Army, even though it was cheaper than its competitor. Production stopped after fewer than 200 vehicles had been produced.
The Tigr is a Russian 4×4 multipurpose all-terrain infantry mobility vehicle manufactured by Military Industrial Company, first delivered to the Russian Army in 2006.
The Pindad Komodo or Pindad Dragon for export markets is a 4x4 light armored car developed and produced by Pindad. The vehicle was developed after Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made a visit to Pindad's main office and asked them to create an indigenous tactical vehicle in order to serve the needs of the Indonesian police and military as an alternative to other 4x4 tactical vehicles such as the Humvee as a personal challenge to the company. The vehicle was given its present name by President Yudhoyono after it was unveiled to the public at the 2012 Indo Defence Expo and Forum in Jakarta, Indonesia so that the Komodo can have a strong impression "at any combat field and could bring the glory for Indonesia.", especially since the Komodo dragon is an endemic animal native to Indonesia.
Weststar Defence Industries Sdn Bhd, also known as Weststar Defense, is a Malaysian defence contractor involved in the development, manufacture and distribution of military and law enforcement vehicles, as well as providing consultancy services.
The IAG Guardian is a United Arab Emirates-made armored personnel vehicle. It was developed by the International Armored Group company. It's available in 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. This vehicle has been used in the Middle East conflict and has been marked as battle proven to participate in low intensity conflicts.
The K151 Raycolt or the Kia Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) is a light utility vehicle released by South Korea's Kia Motors. It entered full production in 2016 and entered service with the Republic of Korea Army the following year.
The ACMAT Bastion is a modern French armoured personnel carrier, manufactured by ACMAT.
The Renault Sherpa 5 is a tactical military truck made by Renault Trucks subsidiary Renault Trucks Defense, renamed Arquus in 2018. It evolved from the Renault GBC 180.
The Temsah is a family of armored personnel carriers developed by the Engineering Industries Complex of the Vehicles Department of the Egyptian Armed Forces, in cooperation with the “Military Factory 200 ” of the National Authority for Military Production, and the “Kader Factory for Developed Industries" of the Arab Organization for Industrialization, for the purposes of transporting serving pedestrians in difficult areas and roads, with an advanced level of protection against various threats.
