A special election for Florida's 40th Senate district took place on September 26, 2017 to fill a vacancy. Democrat Annette Taddeo defeated Republican Jose Felix Diaz, with approximately 23,000 votes to 21,000. [1] [2] [3]
The vacancy had been caused by Republican Senator Frank Artiles's resignation on April 21, 2017 after he unleashed a tirade of racist and sexist remarks to two African-American senators. [4]
Primary elections took place on July 25, 2017.

Lincoln Rafael Díaz-Balart is a Cuban-American attorney and politician. He was the U.S. representative for Florida's 21st congressional district from 1993 to 2011. He is a member of the Republican Party. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate. He retired from Congress in 2011 and his younger brother, Mario Díaz-Balart, who had previously represented Florida's 25th congressional district, succeeded him. He is currently chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute. After leaving Congress, he started a law practice and a consulting firm, both based in Miami, Florida.
The 1950 United States Senate elections occurred in the middle of Harry S. Truman's second term as president. The 32 seats of Class 3 were contested in regular elections, and four special elections were held to fill vacancies. As with most 20th-century second-term midterms, the party not holding the presidency made significant gains. The Republican opposition made a net gain of five seats, taking advantage of the Democratic administration's declining popularity during the Cold War and the aftermath of the Recession of 1949. The Democrats held a narrow 49-to-47-seat majority after the election. This was the first time since 1932 that the Senate majority leader lost his seat, and the only instance of the majority leader losing his seat while his party retained the majority.

A Republican, he served in the Florida Senate from 2010 to 2016, representing parts of Miami, Coral Gables, and the surrounding area. Prior to that, he was a member of the Miami-Dade County Commission from 1993 to 2000.
Ana Rivas Logan is a politician from the state of Florida. She served one term in the Florida House of Representatives, representing parts of Miami-Dade County as a Republican. After decennial redistricting drew her into the same Kendall-based district as fellow Representative José Félix Díaz, Rivas Logan lost the 2012 primary election to Díaz. Before serving in the Florida House, Rivas Logan was a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board from 2004 to 2010. She represented the 7th district.
