The 2024 Miami-Dade County mayoral election was held on August 20, 2024, to elect the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The election was officially nonpartisan; a runoff election would have occurred on November 5, 2024, if no candidate won a majority of the vote. [1]

Contents

Incumbent Daniella Levine Cava, first elected in 2020 with 54.0% of the vote, was re-elected in a landslide. [2]

On election night, early returns and precinct-level data indicated that Levine-Cava would win every municipality except for Miami Lakes, home to her main opponent Manny Cid.

Daniella Levine Cava is an American lawyer, social worker, and politician who has served as the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Florida since 2020. Previously, she was a Miami-Dade County Commissioner from 2014 until her election as mayor in 2020. She handily won re-election in 2024. She is the first woman and the first person of Jewish descent to serve as mayor of Miami-Dade County.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Surfside condominium collapse</span> 2021 building collapse near Miami, Florida, US

On June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:22 a.m. EDT, Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, United States, partially collapsed, causing the deaths of 98 people. Four people were rescued from the rubble, but one died of injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Eleven others were injured. Approximately 35 were rescued the same day from the un-collapsed portion of the building, which was demolished ten days later.

The 2022 elections for the Florida State Senate took place on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, to elect state senators from all 40 districts. Although on ordinary years, 20 senators are elected at a time on a staggered basis, races following redistricting elect all 40 members to ensure that each member represents an equal number of constituents. The Republican Party expanded their Senate majority from 24 to 28, gaining a supermajority in the Senate. The concurrently held House elections also resulted in a supermajority, giving Republicans supermajority control of the legislature.

Florida Amendment 3 was a proposed constitutional amendment to the Florida Constitution subject to a direct voter referendum on November 5, 2024, that would have legalized cannabis for possession, purchase, and recreational use in Florida for adults 21 years or older. The amendment achieved a majority 56% support among voters in the U.S. state of Florida but failed to reach the 60% supermajority required for adoption.
