Following John McGuire's election to Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, a special election is set to be held to replace his seat for Virginia's 10th Senate district. [2] [9] [10] A Republican primary election was held on December 13, 2024, electing Luther Cifers. [11] A special election is set to be held on January 7, 2025, with Democrat Jack Trammell facing against Cifers. [12] [13]

A Democrat, he previously served in the Senate of Virginia since a 2006 special election, representing the 33rd district, made up of parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties. In 2021, Herring lost re-election for a third term to Republican challenger Jason Miyares.
