Farmerville is a town in and the parish seat of Union Parish, Louisiana, United States. [2] It has also been known as Farmersville. [3] The population was 3,860 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is spread about Lake D'Arbonne, a popular fishing and boating waterway.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.6 square miles (15 km2), of which 5.5 square miles (14 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.72%) is water.

Climate

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Farmerville has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. [4]

2022 tornado

On December 13, 2022, the northern part of the town was struck by an EF3 tornado that damaged or destroyed structures and injured 14 people. The tornado caused $1.2 million in damage, with most of the damage coming from the town. [5]

Lake D’Arbonne is a reservoir located near and around the town of Farmerville in Union Parish in north Louisiana. Isolated in a rural area, it is a popular man-made fishing area that has a combined estimated area of 15,250 acres (62 km2). The lake was first conceived in 1957. The 2,450 feet (750 m) long concrete dam was built in 1961 by the Louisiana Department of Public Works and the resulting lake took shape by 1963 behind the 54 feet (16 m) tall dam. Lake D’Arbonne State Park, a state maintained camping and recreation area, lies on the lake.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tornado outbreak of December 12–15, 2022</span> Late-season tornado outbreak in the Southern United States

A four-day tornado outbreak affected the Central and Southern United States in mid-December 2022. The outbreak produced strong tornadoes in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia, resulting in severe damage and three fatalities. On December 13, a high-end EF1 tornado was caught on video from multiple angles as it caused considerable damage in Grapevine, Texas, where five people were injured, and multiple EF2 tornadoes caused significant damage in other parts of Texas and Oklahoma that morning. Two large EF2 tornadoes occurred near DeBerry, Texas and Keachi, Louisiana to the southwest of Shreveport, Louisiana, with the second one causing severe damage and two fatalities. An EF3 tornado struck the northern fringes of Farmerville, causing major structural damage and 14 injuries.
