Mebane is a city located mostly in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States, and partly in Orange County. The town was named for Alexander Mebane, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the U.S. Congress. It was incorporated as "Mebanesville" in 1881, and in 1883 the name was changed to "Mebane". It was incorporated as a city in 1987. The population as of the 2020 census was 17,768. Mebane is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in North Carolina. Mebane straddles the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad Regions of North Carolina. The bulk of the city is in Alamance County, which comprises the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area, itself a component of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point Combined Statistical Area. Two slivers in the eastern portion of the city are in Orange County, which is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area, itself a component of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area.

Thomas Michael Holt was an American industrialist who served as the 47th governor of North Carolina from 1891 to 1893. Formerly a North Carolina State Senator and Speaker of the House of the North Carolina General Assembly, Holt was instrumental in the founding of North Carolina State University, as well as in establishing several railroads within the state and the state's department of agriculture. Holt was also responsible for the technology behind the family's Holt Mills "Alamance Plaids", the first colored cotton goods produced in the South – a development that revolutionized the Southern textile industry.

As of 2012, the Piedmont Triad has an estimated population of 1,611,243 making it the 33rd largest combined statistical area in the United States.
The Haw River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River, approximately 110 mi (177 km) long, that is entirely contained in north central North Carolina in the United States. It was first documented as the "Hau River" by John Lawson, an English botanist, in his 1709 book "A New Voyage to Carolina." The name is shortened from Saxapahaw, from the Catawban /sak'yápha:/, "piedmont, foothill", from /sak/, "hill", plus /yápha:/, "step". The river gives its name to a small town that formed on its banks.

Cross Roads Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and Stainback Store are historic buildings near Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina. The church was built in 1876, and is a 1 1/2-story, brick vernacular church building. The Stainback Store, across from the church, was built about 1888, and is a simple two-story gable front frame structure built from materials of the original church building and session house from about 1792. Located near the church is the contributing cemetery established about 1792.
Hawfields Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church complex located near Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina. The congregation was established by settlers in the 1700s. The complex consists of the original church building, the classroom to the rear of it, the Session House, and the cemetery. The current Greek Revival style brick church building was constructed between 1852 and 1855.
The Woodlawn School is a historic school building located near Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina. It is based on a design by architects Barrett & Thomson and built in two stages in 1911-12 and 1913. It is a Queen Anne style frame building with a gable roof and belfry. The listing included one contributing building and two contributing structures on 4.4 acres (1.8 ha). It was originally used as a school and community center and, after 1935, exclusively as a community center. A stage was added to one of the classrooms and the ballfield constructed in 1939, with Works Progress Administration funds.
Lily Connally Morehead Mebane was an American relief worker, politician, and heiress. During World War I, she chaired the Rockingham County Committee of the North Carolina Division of the Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense. She worked in France and Romania with the American Committee for Devastated France, where she met Queen Marie of Romania. She remained friends with the Queen Marie until the queen's death in 1938. For her relief work during the war, Mebane was awarded the Cross of Mercy by King Peter I of Serbia and was made Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French government.

Mary Elizabeth White Scott was an American teacher, farmer, and civic leader. As the wife of Governor W. Kerr Scott, she served as the First Lady of North Carolina from 1949 to 1953. She was the mother of Robert W. Scott, who also served as North Carolina's governor. Scott was the second First Lady of North Carolina to be both a wife and mother of North Carolinina governors, after Elizabeth Montfort Ashe.
