This is a list of members of the National Assembly in the 24th Parliament of South Africa as elected in the 2004 general election [1] and accounting for changes in membership during the legislative term as of 15 January 2009. [2]

Contents

As of January 2009, the Speaker of the National Assembly was Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde and Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge was her deputy. Obed Bapela was House Chairperson, with Andries Nel as deputy; and Mnyamezeli Booi was Chief Whip of the Majority Party, with Gratitude Magwanishe as deputy. [2]

Zwelethu Lukanyiso "Mighty" Madasa is a South African politician and lawyer who served in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2010, excepting a month-long hiatus in 2009. He represented the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC). He resigned from the National Assembly in September 2010 and became the Clerk of the Pan-African Parliament.

Floor crossing was a system introduced to the post-apartheid South African political system in 2002, under which members of Parliament, members of provincial legislatures and local government councillors could change political party and take their seats with them when they did so. Floor crossing in South Africa was abolished in January 2009.

Enyinna Nkem-Abonta is a Nigerian-born South African retired politician who was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in the 2004 general election as a member of the Democratic Alliance. He resigned from the DA in 2005 and joined the African National Congress. Nkem-Abonta left parliament at the 2009 general election.

Richard Sibusiso Ntuli is a South African politician who represented Gauteng in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. He was first elected as a member of the Democratic Party (DP), later the Democratic Alliance (DA), but he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC) in 2005.

Carl Heinrich Friederich Greyling is a South African politician who represented the Western Cape in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. He was the chief whip of the New National Party (NNP) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC).

André Hurtley Gaum is a South African lawyer and politician who is currently serving as a full-time commissioner at the South African Human Rights Commission. Louis Michael Green is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009. He was the chief whip of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the newly founded Federation of Democrats (FD). He has since joined the Congress of the People (COPE).

Adriaan Hermanus "Maans" Nel is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009, representing the Northern Cape. He was a member of the National Party (NP) and New National Party (NNP) until March 2003, when he crossed the floor to the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Vincent Charles Gore is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. Florence Batyi is a South African politician who represented the Independent Democrats (ID) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2007. She was expelled from the party in August 2007 on suspicion of planning to cross the floor to another party.

Cecil Bernard Herandien is a retired South African politician who represented the New National Party (NNP) in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2005. Before that, he served in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, where he was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Housing.

He was elected as a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) but crossed the floor to the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) in September 2005. He was elected as secretary-general of Nadeco in April 2007.

Avril Harding is a South African politician who was founding secretary-general of the Independent Democrats (ID) from the party's launch in June 2003 until July 2007. He also represented the party in the National Assembly from April 2004 to August 2007, serving the Western Cape constituency.
