Vacancies and replacements

A seat in the National Assembly becomes vacant when the member dies, resigns, ceases to be eligible, or is elected as President of South Africa. In addition, section 47(3)(c) of the Constitution prescribes that a person loses his membership if he ceases to be a member of the party that nominated him as a member. [3] Any vacancy is filled from the same party list as the former member.
