The Director of the British Museum is the head of the British Museum in London, a post currently held by Nicholas Cullinan. He is responsible for that institution's general administration and reports its accounts to the British Government. The actual governance of the British Museum, however, is delegated to its board of trustees. [1]

At the museum's inception its most senior member of staff was called "principal librarian". The job title became "director and principal librarian" in 1898, and "director" in 1973, on the separation of the British Library from the museum.

Sir Colin Richard Budd, is a British civil servant and diplomat. The Corpus Christi Professorship of the Latin Language and Literature, also known simply as the Corpus Christi Professorship of Latin and previously as the Corpus Professorship of Latin, is a chair in Latin literature at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. Genevra Mercy Richardson, is a British legal scholar, specialising in public and administrative law. From 2005 to 2017, she was Professor of Law at King's College, London. She has served as Vice President of the British Academy since 2016. She previously taught and researched at the University of Oxford, the University of East Anglia, and Queen Mary, University of London, where she was Dean of its Faculty of Law.

Maysie Florence Webb, was a British librarian and museum executive. She was Head of the Patent Office Library from 1960 to 1966, and when it was renamed, served as Keeper of the National Reference Library of Science and Invention from 1966 to 1968. As such, she was the first woman to head a national museum. She joined the British Museum in 1968 as assistant director and was its deputy director from 1971 to 1983: these were both newly created posts.

Reginald James Albert Askew was a British Anglican priest and academic. He was Principal of Salisbury and Wells Theological College from 1973 to 1987, and Dean of King's College London from 1988 to 1993.

Andrew Michael Burnett, is a British numismatist and museum curator, who specialises in Roman coins. He was Deputy Director of the British Museum from 2003 to 2013, and Keeper of its Department of Coins and Medals from 1992 to 2003. He was president of the Royal Numismatic Society from 2013 to 2018.

Sir (Charles) Peter Scott, was a British diplomat, who served as Ambassador to Norway from 1975 to 1977.
