Edo State University, Uzairue (abbreviated EDSU) is a state government-owned tertiary institution founded in 2016. It is located in Iyamho, a town in Etsako West local government area of Edo State, Nigeria. On 23 March 2016, the university was approved by the National Universities Commission as Nigeria's 41st state university. [2] Edo State University offer undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes.

History

On 27 March 2014, the Edo State House of Assembly passed a bill for the establishment of a University of Science and Technology at Uzairue. [3] The university was however changed to Edo University and its location to Iyamho. [4]

Ranking and achievement

In 2018, the university was ranked first among State government owned Universities and third University in Nigeria in the first ever Open Educational Resources (OER) conducted by National Universities Commission (NUC) Institutional repository. [5]

Criticism

Upon the establishment of Edo State University, Uzairue, the Governor of Edo State Adams Oshiomole was criticized by some section of the press. Francis Akhigbe of THISDAYLive cited "personal interest" as the reason why Oshiomole established the university . [4] The media also felt there was no need of establishing a university when other tertiary institutions in the state were already in bad conditions. [6]

The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a government commission for promoting quality higher education in Nigeria. Situated in Abuja, it was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the cabinet office. In 1974, it became a statutory body and its first executive secretary was professor Jibril Aminu. NUC is currently part of the Federal Ministry of Education and is a parastatal.

The Afemai, also spelled Afenmai, are an ethnic group living in the northern part of Edo State, South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Afemai people occupy six local government areas of Edo state: Etsako West, with headquarters in Auchi it has an area of 944.8 km² with a population of 198,975 at the 2006 census, Etsako Central, with the headquarters in Fugar it has an area of 659.7 km² with a population of 94,228 in the 2006 census, Etsako East, with the headquarters in Agenebode it has an area of 1,131 km² with a population of 147,335 in the 2006 census, Owan East with Afuze as the headquarters it has an area of 1,239 km² with a population of 154,630 in the 2006 census, Owan West with Sabongida-Ora as the headquarters it has an area of 731.4 km² with a population of 99,056 in the 2006 census and Akoko Edo,Igara being the headquarters It has an area of 1,371 km² with a population of 262,567 at the 2006 census.These make up the Edo-North Senatorial District.

The 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election was held on 28 September, 2016 to determine the Governor of Edo State. The election was originally scheduled for 10 September, however two days before, on 8 September it was postponed due to security concerns.

College of Education, Ekiadolor is a defunct government owned College of Education located in Edo State, Southern part of Nigeria. The Institution was established in 1980 under the administration of Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli of the defunct Bendel State. The College was one of the government approved tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The Institution served as a Centre for training of School Teachers in Nigeria. The College of Education awards National Certificates in Education (NCE) to its graduates. NCE is a mandatory requirement for those who want to work as a teacher in a Nigerian school. The College was one of the three tertiary Colleges of Education in Edo State, with the other two being College of Education, Igueben and College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi.

The University of Delta is a Public University in Agbor, Delta State The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses covering five faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Education, Information Technology, Medicine and Law.

The Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba is a Public University in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Edo State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Edo State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

Emmanuel Aluyor is a Nigerian professor of chemical engineering and the vice chancellor of Edo State University, Uzairue since 2018.
